MELVILLE, N.Y. — Cynthia Menna, Vice President and General Manager of Audio Visual (AV) at ADI Global Distribution, recounts her serendipitous journey into the industry which began over 25 years ago. She underlines the importance of fostering relationships that have evolved over the years.
Menna emphasizes the significance of her early career experiences and the mentors, particularly her parents, who have been instrumental in honing her leadership abilities. She takes pride in the women within her leadership team and advocates for enhanced opportunities and visibility to attract emerging talent to the AV and security sectors.
As we continue to celebrate International Women’s History Month, here’s a glimpse of Menna’s insights.
How did you get into the AV and security industry?
Cynthia Menna: My entry into this field was completely unplanned. It was not until my first job after college that I recognized there was such a thing as an “industry.” I began my career at a smart home/AV manufacturer affiliated with IBM, and the rest is truly history!
Have you encountered difficulties or obstacles in your AV and security industry career?
Menna: Challenges are a constant factor in any career, especially in an ever-evolving industry. I’ve faced tough decisions and managed difficult personalities along the way. However, each obstacle has offered a chance for growth, inviting reflection on my management approach, acknowledging my imperfections, and ultimately strengthening both my team and our organization.
Who were your most influential mentors and how did they support your career?
Menna: It’s challenging to pinpoint just a few influences! Reflecting on my earliest roles, even outside of AV, I draw inspiration from my experience at a women-owned business during high school and college summers. The owner and her team exhibited kindness, service-mindedness, and a deep understanding of business. I felt encouraged to make decisions and was included in discussions, despite my junior status. That foundational experience filled me with the confidence to assert my leadership capabilities.
Additionally, I must mention my parents. I am incredibly fortunate to have two wonderful role models who instilled in me essential skills that I utilize daily in my professional life, with accountability being paramount. They taught me the significance of commitment, teamwork, the value of education, the impact of contributing to the community, as well as the principles of integrity and honesty.
What is your proudest career accomplishment?
Menna: I have been very fortunate throughout my time at ADI Global Distribution, especially now that we have merged with Snap One. Working alongside such talented individuals is a blessing. I take immense pride in the remarkable women that comprise our leadership team!
Additionally, witnessing the growth and success of my colleagues is profoundly fulfilling. For instance, last year, we sent some team members to the NSCA Excellence in Business Operations (XBO) Experience, where Maura Fitzgerald had the opportunity to speak to the audience and received phenomenal feedback from both her presentation and the attendees. Moments like that fill me with pride.
What do you love most about working in the AV and security industry?
Menna: While I genuinely appreciate the innovative products we offer, what I cherish most are the people! It may sound cliché, yet it’s absolutely true. I deeply value the longstanding relationships that we have developed over the years. Regardless of personal dynamics, respect is a core value within our industry, fostering countless wonderful and enduring friendships.
How can the AV and security industry improve?
Menna: I would love to see a sustained commitment to early education and training. Although some initiatives are underway, there’s much more to accomplish. We all recognize the challenges in finding talent, yet there is a significant opportunity to create clearer pathways into our industry and enhance its visibility.
