WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – A series of Women’s college lacrosse matchups took center stage in local sports on Wednesday night, showcasing intense rivalries and impressive performances. The highlight of the night included games featuring Clarkson University facing off against St. Lawrence University, as well as SUNY Plattsburgh competing with SUNY Potsdam.
Clarkson vs. St. Lawrence: A Competitive Rivalry
In the rivalry clash between Clarkson and St. Lawrence, the first quarter was characterized by quick action and skillful plays. Madelynn Barnum initiated the scoring for Clarkson, connecting on a pass to make it 3-1. Teammate Gabby Cranfield followed suit, striking a powerful shot into the net for a 4-2 advantage. However, Neve Ley of St. Lawrence responded effectively, narrowing the gap to 4-3 by the end of the quarter.
The second quarter saw Hannah Jackson of St. Lawrence netting an equalizer, making it 4-4. Caroline Hamilton then moved past defenders to put the Saints ahead 5-4. Lily Stanton capitalized on defensive gaps to broaden the margin, helping St. Lawrence secure a convincing 12-6 victory over Clarkson.
SUNY Plattsburgh vs. SUNY Potsdam: A Close Contest
In another thrilling matchup, SUNY Plattsburgh battled against SUNY Potsdam. The Bears struck first as Lindsey LaDue, a standout from Massena, showcased her resilience by scoring after being knocked down, leading to a 1-0 Potsdam lead. Cynthia Barnosky countered with a sidewinding shot, equalizing at 1-1 for Plattsburgh. Barnosky then executed a low spin move on her defender to give Plattsburgh a 2-1 advantage.
Jayla Thompson, another Massena product, again tied the game for Potsdam at 2-2 before Parishville native Meg MacWilliams assisted Tessa Pierce, pushing the Bears ahead 3-2. LaDue not only scored again, but set a single-season scoring record for Potsdam with an impressive total of 79 points, alongside a school record of 148 goals and 201 points. Thompson’s continued offensive efforts brought the score to 5-3 in favor of the Bears. Although Erica Dickinson managed to narrow the deficit with a goal for Plattsburgh, Potsdam ultimately prevailed with a close final score of 9-7, securing the win.
Baseball Action: JCC vs. Finger Lakes
In the baseball arena, Jefferson Community College (JCC) hosted a doubleheader against Finger Lakes. Although the Cannoneers fell short in the first game with a 9-3 defeat, they looked to recover in the second match. JCC led early, with Robert Leyva’s single pushing their score to 4-0 as Braiden Bly crossed the plate. They expanded the lead further when Ryan Murnane hit a double, making it 5-0 after two innings.
Despite a promising start, Finger Lakes made a comeback, finishing the second game with an 8-7 victory over JCC, thus completing the doubleheader sweep.
