Promoting Gender Equality in Science: P&G’s Commitment to Women and Girls

Procter & Gamble (P&G) has been a leader in innovation for over 185 years, aiming to enhance the lives of consumers globally. Notably, the company’s diverse product lineup, including Tide and Olay, is supported by scientific research aimed at understanding consumer needs, particularly those of women and girls who represent over half of their customer base.

P&G recognizes that diverse perspectives foster innovation. With women influencing the majority of household purchasing choices, the company strives to cultivate an inclusive workforce that mirrors the diversity of its consumer base. Women play critical roles across various functions — from scientists developing groundbreaking formulations to engineers designing efficient packaging.

On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, P&G shines a light on the vital contributions of women in advancing the company’s innovations while encouraging young women to explore STEM careers.

Hands-On Learning Experience

Recently, P&G hosted an enlightening two-day event at its Research & Development centers. This collaboration involved young women from organizations such as Girl Up, The Links, and the Greater Cincinnati STEM Collaborative. Participating students received an insider’s look at the science that drives their favorite products, while also learning about the significant roles women have historically played at P&G.

Day one focused on P&G’s extensive history, guided by archivists who showcased the achievements of women like Else Schulze, P&G’s first female Ph.D. scientist hired in 1926. Her contributions have paved the way for future generations of women in science.

Insight into P&G Brands

The second day featured discussions with experts from P&G’s Fabric Care labs, where students learned about the science behind popular products such as Tide. Scientists Kim Romine and Jennifer Ahoni shared their career journeys, which sparked inspiration in the attendees.

Students engaged in interactive demonstrations, gaining insight into the experimentation and quality testing that ensure product effectiveness. Following this, the group delved into the skincare realm, guided by Dr. Rolanda Wilkerson, a Senior Director at P&G Beauty. Dr. Wilkerson introduced them to Olay’s newest innovations, showcasing how scientific advancements in skincare benefit consumers.

Advocating for Future Innovators

The program emphasized the need for mentorship and the importance of gender equality in science. Outside of lab work, P&G collaborates with initiatives such as Girl Up and OLAY’s Face the STEM Gap, which aim to create educational opportunities and inspire future female leaders in science.

P&G’s legacy demonstrates a commitment to gender inclusivity, dating back to the establishment of their analytical lab in 1890. Subsequently, the hiring of Else Schulze in 1926 marked a significant step toward fostering a diverse STEM workforce.

Legacy of Female Innovators

Through continuous efforts to create a supportive environment, P&G empowers women to lead in scientific and technological innovation. Today, women contribute significantly to developing groundbreaking products beloved in households worldwide, contributing to P&G’s ethos of serving all consumers effectively.

For more than a century, P&G has honored the legacies of women like Schulze, reflecting on their roles in science and innovation, while looking ahead to build a more inclusive future.

Conclusion

P&G remains dedicated to fostering an inclusive culture that encourages women and girls to pursue careers in STEM. By supporting future generations of innovators, the company aims to unlock new solutions for consumers, furthering its commitment to gender equality and community impact.
