Empowering Women Through Dress for Success
What began as a modest closet in a church basement has evolved into a global initiative dedicated to assisting women in enhancing their careers. Dress for Success stands as the leading international resource for unemployed and underemployed women, providing essential support through clothing donations that help women acquire suitable attire for the workplace.
A Source of Confidence
“Many of our clients are mothers, including single moms at various stages in their lives,” explained Michelle Artis, program director of Dress for Success Mid-Fairfield County. “We serve a diverse group of women, yet they all share a common goal: to gain the confidence they need to re-enter the workforce.”
A Global Network
Currently, Dress for Success boasts 141 affiliates across 24 countries, all committed to uplifting women. “What sets Dress for Success apart is our focus solely on women,” Artis noted. “While we frequently receive inquiries about assisting men, we prioritize creating a safe space for women to receive not just clothing, but also encouragement and support on their professional journeys.”
Comprehensive Support Services
Dress for Success Mid-Fairfield County collaborates with over 70 referral organizations, including homeless shelters, domestic violence support services, and job training programs, to reach women in need.
Known for its suiting service, each woman is provided with a professional outfit for job interviews and a week’s worth of business attire upon gaining employment, including accessories such as shoes and jewelry.
Transformative Impact of Appropriate Attire
Each client is paired with a volunteer who serves as a personal shopper, helping them choose an outfit that not only looks stylish but also feels empowering. Artis emphasized, “The right suit can be transformative, boosting posture and instilling confidence for job interviews. We’re allowing women to feel good about themselves and inspiring them to take the next step.”
A Personal Journey of Empowerment
Kimberly Lawton, a mother of four, reflects on her own positive experiences with Dress for Success. Having been introduced to the program over two decades ago, she shared, “It raised my self-esteem significantly, even at 52. It was a transformative experience.”
Dress for Success conveys an important message: looking your best shouldn’t come at an exorbitant cost. “With rising prices, purchasing quality clothing feels daunting,” Lawton commented. “Thanks to Dress for Success, the donated items—despite not being brand new—make you feel just as good.”
The Long-Term Benefits of Support
Erica Mann, a dedicated volunteer for over 20 years, emphasizes that it’s not merely about receiving new outfits; it’s about the positive changes those outfits can catalyze in a woman’s life. “We have witnessed women secure fantastic jobs, purchase homes, receive promotions, and even start businesses,” she noted, reflecting on the power of the program.
Additional Programs for Growth
Beyond suiting, Dress for Success offers a wealth of free programs, including interview preparation workshops, resume reviews, and financial literacy classes. “We partner with local banks to educate women on maintaining their finances once they land a job,” Artis explained. “Understanding financial management is crucial for long-term success.”
Community and Continued Learning
The organization also facilitates the Professional Women’s Group (PWG), a supportive network designed to help newly employed clients navigate their careers. The PWG enables women to connect, share experiences, and foster professional growth through guest speakers and discussions on achieving their goals.
Additionally, clients are encouraged to pursue further education with access to scholarship opportunities for degrees or vocational certifications. “These are women who truly deserve a chance,” Mann remarked.
Upcoming Fundraising Event
The organization holds its annual fundraiser, the Empower Her celebration, on May 6. “Funds raised during this event are vital for sustaining our programs and ensuring we can continue to support women effectively,” Artis elaborated.
Beyond Employment: A Journey of Self-Discovery
For many, including Lawton, the impact of Dress for Success extends beyond just finding a job. “For those of us who’ve had very little, moving forward and feeling like you have everything—if only that outfit—is truly a blessing,” she concluded.
