Empowering Women Through Activism: A Landmark Event at Lady Doak College
MADURAI: The annual United Nations Women Campaign, titled ‘16 Days of Activism #NoExcuse – UNiTE to End Violence Against Women,’ commenced at Lady Doak College in Madurai on November 20th, 2024. Organized by the Centre for Women’s Studies at LDC, this event stands as a resolute campaign against gender-based violence, advocating for a world where women can live freely and safely.
Inauguration Ceremony Highlights
The event was inaugurated by Mr. Justice V. Sivagnanam of the Madras High Court, with notable attendees including Deputy Commissioner of Police Ms. S. Vanitha, senior advocate Mr. K. Samidurai, and LDC Principal Dr. Beulah Jeyashree, among others. Their presence highlighted the collaborative effort aimed at mobilizing support for women’s rights and safety.
Justice S. Manikumar, Chairperson of the State Human Rights Commission, joined the ceremony virtually and praised the college for establishing the Justice K. Samidurai Prize. This award recognizes outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students who actively assist peers in addressing crimes against women, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and support in the fight against violence.
A Call for Confidence and Courage
During the event, Justice Sivagnanam encouraged students to cultivate self-confidence and resist external pressures. Deputy Commissioner Vanitha shared a powerful story of a 14-year-old girl who bravely reported her abuse to the police, leading to a successful conviction of her perpetrator, illustrating the vital role of personal agency in combating violence.
Mr. K. Samidurai recounted how LDC students had previously advocated against the establishment of a bar near educational institutions and sought compensation for an acid attack survivor, showcasing the college’s commitment to social justice and community activism.
Strengthening the Movement
Justice S. Manikumar and other speakers urged proactive measures to combat violence against women, commending the initiatives undertaken by Lady Doak College to increase awareness. Principal Dr. Beulah Jeyashree emphasized that the activism campaign is a definitive message that women will not be silenced and will stand against abuse.
Dr. Vanitha Malarvizhi, who delivered the vote of thanks, highlighted that knowledge and awareness are crucial for overcoming violence and empowering women to reclaim their rights and safety.
