In Norse mythology, valkyries were revered figures tasked with guiding fallen warriors to a paradise in the afterlife. Similarly, in contemporary sports, the emergence of teams like the WNBA’s Golden State Valkyries epitomizes a transformative wave in professional women’s sports in the U.S., paralleling developments within the Bay Area NWSL.

While greater access to women’s sports has been celebrated, its impact extends beyond mere representation. Research indicates that the establishment of professional women’s teams plays a pivotal role in enhancing economic opportunities for women in the industry, particularly in spectator sports.

A recent analysis of data from the American Community Survey (2018-2022), conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, reveals that the presence of a professional women’s sports team can lead to a 20%-30% increase in earnings for local women employed in spectator sports. This growth substantially reduces the gender wage gap, which remains a significant barrier in professional sectors.

The data was rigorously controlled for factors such as education, local living costs, and the general treatment of women in the workforce, ensuring that the results accurately reflect the influence of women’s sports teams on wage disparities.

This evidence underscores a significant shift: the rise of women’s sports is not merely subjected to existing market dynamics but is actively reshaping economic landscapes as these leagues grow.

Cities and Leagues: Harnessing Economic Potential

Notably, the data suggests that communities with a balanced ratio of men’s and women’s sports teams—approaching a 50-50 split—experience a notable diminishing of income disparity. This insight allows civic leaders to view the proliferation of women’s sports not only as a step towards equality but as a strategic avenue for local economic development.

For city planners and sports executives, this information provides a compelling case for investment in women’s sports. By highlighting the economic benefits, stakeholders can advocate for funding from both public and private entities, fostering partnerships that could potentially yield favorable conditions for expansion.

Brands: Strategic Investment in Women’s Sports

As participation in women’s sports continues to grow, many brands are now more inclined to view investment in these teams and leagues as a sound business opportunity. Engaging female athletes as product endorsers proves lucrative: fans of women’s sports are 2.8 times more likely to purchase endorsed products, and one-third of these fans prefer brands that actively support women’s sports initiatives.

This shift in perspective dispels the notion that funding women’s sports is merely philanthropic. Instead, brands stand to gain considerable advantages while fostering gender equity in a traditionally male-dominated field.

Furthermore, the presence of women’s teams significantly influences employment trends, particularly among parents. Data indicates that parents are 40% more likely to work in spectator sports when a women’s team is in their locality, enhancing not only career opportunities but potentially improving workplace conditions, especially for mothers.

Closing the Gender Income Gap: Broader Implications

The implications of these advancements extend far beyond individual benefits. Closing the gender wage gap is instrumental in stimulating economic growth at both local and national levels. Increased earnings empower women and their families, contributing positively to savings and investment potential, while enhancing women’s continued participation in the workforce.

Economic analysis shows that the total lost wages for women across various industries, including sports, amounted to $1.6 trillion—over 6% of U.S. GDP in 2022. While the sports sector may be a smaller contributor, it wields significant influence over cultural shifts and societal norms.

Ultimately, a society where the gender income gap has diminished is achievable. The expansion of women’s sports can serve as a critical pathway towards this equitable future.
