EKU Women’s Flag Football Team: Breaking Barriers and Building Community
Introduction
Since its inception in the late 1800s, the sport of football has often relegated women to sidelines rather than the playing field. However, Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) is challenging these stereotypes with its newly established women’s flag football team.
Team Formation and Growth
Founded in the spring of 2025, the EKU women’s flag football team initially struggled to gain traction. Recently, however, under the leadership of Head Coach Evan Duke and team captain Harlee Romero, the team has seen significant growth.
“In the spring, we had very few people; we started with just nine,” said Duke. “This semester, we’ve expanded to 17 players and even had to keep 19 because of the talent they brought.”
Romero echoed Duke’s sentiments, expressing enthusiasm about the recent influx of new participants. “Evan created a playbook, and now we have enough athletes to actually implement the plays during practice,” she said. “It’s been a lot of fun.”
Strategy and Coaching Approach
Duke, who previously coached at the EKU football team, noted the unique challenges of coaching women who may not have extensive experience with the game. He has adapted his coaching style to ensure clarity in communication. “Terminology has been the biggest hurdle,” he admitted. “What seems simple to me can leave the players confused.”
Romero, with her extensive background in football, plays a pivotal role in guiding her teammates. Having started her own football journey in the first grade, she is both knowledgeable and passionate about the sport.
Duke’s experience as a former linebacker at Stetson University brings a depth of strategy to the team. He commented on the advantages of having a structured playbook and noted that many women’s flag football teams might lack such meticulous planning.
Confidence and Competitive Spirit
Both Duke and Romero exhibit great confidence in their team’s potential. “I believe our athletes are among the best,” Duke stated. “If other teams underestimate us, they will soon see their mistake.”
Romero shares this optimism, looking forward to showcasing their skills in upcoming matches. “I am confident in our abilities and excited for our first game,” she said.
Upcoming Challenges and Community Engagement
The team’s first tournament is scheduled for November at Virginia Tech, with Duke excited about the competition ahead. In addition to competitions, the team is committed to community involvement, holding fundraising events to support their travel expenses.
A car wash and basketball tournament are also planned later in the year to engage with the local community and raise funds.
