Commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign
The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign will occur from November 25 to December 10 this year.
Government’s Commitment to Combat Violence
The South African government has officially endorsed the framework for this year’s campaign, centered on the theme, “30 Years of Advancing Collective Action to End Violence Against Women and Children.”
A Collective Effort Against Gender-Based Violence
This campaign highlights the critical need for an inclusive approach from all sectors of society to fight gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF). Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, emphasized this critical point last Wednesday, November 13.
Addressing Root Causes and Promoting Gender Equity
“This year, the campaign will continue to tackle the underlying causes of GBVF, promote positive masculinity, and advocate for gender equity, while also striving to create economic opportunities for women and children,” stated Ms. Ntshavheni. “Although over 1,000 GBVF offenders were convicted between April 1 and September 31, 2024, our nation must do more to eliminate this blight from our society.”
Honoring 26 Years of Activism
This year marks the 26th anniversary of South Africa’s involvement in the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign, launching on November 25. This effort aligns with the global campaign that spans from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day).
