Empowering Black Girls Through Fitness in Delaware
The Delaware chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women is actively promoting a fitness initiative designed specifically for Black girls in the First State. This program aims to address concerns surrounding physical activity and fitness among young Black girls, as highlighted by Sherese Brewington-Carr, the organization’s chairperson for strategic partnerships.
Addressing Fitness Concerns
Brewington-Carr shared that many Black girls in Delaware are seeking to incorporate more movement into their lives and enhance their physical well-being. To support this endeavor, the NCBW’s 100 Bridges Program has teamed up with Orangetheory Fitness, a woman-owned establishment, to provide a platform for Black girls to engage in comprehensive full-body workouts every Saturday throughout February. These sessions are integral to the NCBW chapter’s Black Girls Move initiative.
Fostering a Culture of Wellness
It is a priority for NCBW to empower participants not only through physical activity but also by educating them about overall wellness. Brewington-Carr emphasized, “The earlier we start considering our bodies’ needs, our fitness levels, and our dietary habits, the more likely we are to establish positive routines.”
A Customized Approach to Fitness
The partnership with Orangetheory was influenced by the program’s all-encompassing nature. “It seemed to have some systemic consistency around activity,” Brewington-Carr noted. “Everything is accessible in one location… Participants receive a full-body workout that is individually tailored, ensuring there’s no one-size-fits-all approach.”
Incorporating Holistic Knowledge
The fitness sessions also focus on important areas such as hydration, sleep, and nutrition, providing participants with knowledge checks during each class. Additionally, attendees have access to heart rate monitors, allowing them to track their progress effectively.
Looking Ahead
Brewington-Carr expressed her hope that NCBW will soon be able to host similar programs in the future. Until then, the organization continues to engage the community through free walks and various wellness events.
