Empowering Afghan Girls Through Women’s Voice Radio
Kabul
KABUL, Jun 13 (IPS) – In the wake of stringent restrictions imposed by the Taliban since their return to power in 2021, Afghan women have faced grave challenges, particularly in educational and professional domains. Among them is 16-year-old Mehrangiz from Badakhshan, a region renowned for its natural beauty and precious gems.
Impact of Restrictions on Women’s Lives
Under the new regime, women have been essentially barred from pursuing education and engaging in public life, leading to a rise in mental health crises. Mehrangiz vividly recalls a moment in her 10th-grade studies when she was abruptly told that schools would no longer welcome girls. The shock of that announcement changed her life drastically.
A Path to Healing Through Radio
While grappling with despair, Mehrangiz stumbled upon a transformative experience while attending a women’s-only restaurant, Kedbanu. There, she listened to a psychotherapist on Sadee Banowan Radio discuss the impacts of depression. Intrigued and inspired, she connected with the radio station, eager to explore mental health resources.
Counseling Opens New Horizons
When Mehrangiz visited the radio station, she found herself in a supportive environment. Speaking with the psychotherapist not only offered her practical coping strategies but also reignited her fighting spirit. “Let us try to find an alternative way to life rather than ruining our souls and tormenting our families,” the doctor advised. This guidance motivated her to embrace life with a renewed sense of hope.
