Malaysia Launches Wanita MyWira Accelerator to Empower Women in the Workforce
In a significant move towards gender equity in the workplace, Malaysia has initiated the Wanita MyWira Accelerator. This program aims to equip over 100,000 women with essential skills and opportunities to thrive in high-growth sectors, reflecting a commitment to bridging the gender gap in the labor force.
Program Overview
The initial phase of the Wanita MyWira Accelerator is supported by a co-investment model of RM15 million, which will involve 1,000 companies. These businesses are dedicated to implementing flexible work practices and creating returnship opportunities for women returning to work after career breaks. They will also focus on hiring graduates who have completed targeted training.
During the first year, approximately 1,000 women will undergo training through TalentCorp’s MyMahir-certified pathways, with an ambitious goal of achieving an 80% job placement rate within six months of completing their training.
Long-Term Goals
Beyond its immediate focus, the Wanita MyWira Accelerator aspires to empower more than 100,000 women by 2030. This initiative is aligned with Malaysia’s broader objective to increase female labor force participation and create a more inclusive workforce.
Key features of the program include:
- Targeted training programs.
- Partnerships with employers to promote inclusive hiring practices.
- Childcare-friendly practices to facilitate women’s workforce participation.
Collaboration and Support
The initiative is spearheaded by the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) in collaboration with Talent Corporation Malaysia and the World Economic Forum (WEF). This partnership highlights Malaysia’s entry into WEF’s Global Gender Parity Accelerator Network, marking it as the first ASEAN nation to join this international platform aimed at enhancing women’s economic participation.
Statements from Officials
“Through the Wanita MyWira Accelerator, the Government aims to further remove barriers to women’s participation in the workforce by offering training for flexible job opportunities, promoting family and caregiving-friendly workplaces, and boosting women’s workforce participation, especially in rural areas,” said Minister of Human Resources Steven Sim.
Additionally, Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, emphasized that this initiative embodies Malaysia’s belief that the success of women correlates directly to national progress. She noted:
“Through Wanita MyWira, in collaboration with KESUMA and TalentCorp, we are creating real pathways for women to access decent work and participate fully in Malaysia’s economy.”
Addressing Gender Gaps
As per projections, it is estimated that closing the gender gap in East Asia may take as long as 179 years. Saadia Zahidi, Managing Director at the World Economic Forum, remarked on the potential of the Wanita MyWira Accelerator:
“By focusing on women’s access to opportunities in AI, digital, and green sectors — where growth and demand are strongest — this initiative tackles both workforce transformation and gender equity simultaneously.”
She further added that empowering women in fast-growing sectors would enhance Malaysia’s resilience and growth while paving the way for a more equitable future.
