KUALA LUMPUR – Embracing Potential and Breaking Stereotypes
Navinder Kaur Thandal embodies the spirit of a woman who fully embraces her potential. Now in her early 30s, this certified personal trainer and health coach took up arm wrestling several years ago to challenge gender stereotypes in the sport, competing in multiple national-level championships.
Championing Health and Empowerment
Navinder is a trailblazer for women who strive for excellence in competitive sports and corporate leadership. She passionately advocates for the transformative power of prioritizing physical health and well-being.
“Fitness transcends aesthetics; it empowers us mentally and physically. My fitness journey, which began in 2016, has been life-changing. Through strength training, I gained confidence, discipline, and mental resilience,” she shared with Bernama. As International Women’s Day approaches on March 8, her message for women is clear: “Fitness is a stepping stone to success in every area of life.”
Breaking Barriers and Dispelling Myths
Navinder often encounters skepticism regarding women engaging in strength training and arm wrestling. She firmly believes that there are no barriers based on gender in sports and emphasizes that strength training can significantly change lives.
“Many women hesitate to lift weights due to the misconception that it will make them bulky. In reality, building muscle enhances strength, health, and confidence. Strength training is crucial for women as it not only bolsters physical health but also addresses various issues, including PCOS, hormonal imbalances, anxiety, and depression,” she explains.
“True transformation occurs when you embrace your body’s evolution. Today’s women face not only high body fat percentages but also a lack of muscle, which can lead to long-term health concerns. Regular strength training is the best way to maintain muscle mass, especially as we age. It goes beyond fitness; it’s about longevity and improving the quality of life,” she asserts.
Transforming Lives Through Fitness
As the owner of a fitness center in USJ 9, Subang Jaya, Selangor, Navinder finds motivation in witnessing the transformations and confidence gained by her clients.
“Fitness embodies self-love, self-respect, and self-discipline. When you prioritize your health, every aspect of life improves,” she remarks.
A Call for Consistency in Health
Kalwinder Kaur, a senior corporate executive, echoes Navinder’s sentiments, promoting the importance of consistency and balance in the pursuit of health goals.
“Health and fitness are lifelong commitments. It’s essential to set realistic goals and maintain a balanced diet,” she states, emphasizing the significance of integrating workouts even into the busiest of schedules.
“Exercise fuels my energy, improves my focus, and enhances my ability to manage stress. The discipline I’ve developed through fitness has made me more resilient and confident in my corporate role,” she adds.

“On International Women’s Day, my message is straightforward: amidst our commitments to others, we must also carve out time for ourselves,” she asserts.
“Self-love, respect, and care aren’t selfish—they are vital. You cannot pour from an empty cup. By prioritizing our well-being, we can genuinely support those around us. Let’s uplift one another while also remembering to uplift ourselves,” she encourages.
Pursuing Passions Alongside Commitments
Dr. Thyivya Kalaiselvan, an aesthetic doctor, musician, and entrepreneur, emphasizes the need to pursue passions alongside professional responsibilities for a well-rounded life.
“Music has been a part of my life since childhood; it fuels my creativity as an entrepreneur. However, societal expectations can be challenging, as people sometimes underestimate individuals with diverse interests,” she reflects.
“I overcame these challenges by choosing a career that provides the flexibility to balance both my profession and personal passions,” she concluded.
