In recent years, solo travel among older women has surged, driven by a quest for personal freedom, independence, and the enthusiasm to seize the moment. According to a survey conducted by Girls’ Guide to the World, which included responses from 330 women, it has become evident that women aged 50 and above are reshaping the landscape of luxury travel and their approach to solo adventures.
The survey highlights a growing preference for small-group journeys that emphasize meaningful connections, cultural immersion, and transformative experiences, steering clear of typical tourist traps. Notably, 65% of respondents expressed a desire for deeper cultural interactions while traveling, with relaxation and adventure also being sought after by 56% and 44% of participants, respectively. Additionally, a significant portion of these women—36%—long for camaraderie, while 28% are interested in wellness-focused travel.
Liz Einbinder from Backroads underscores the driving force behind this trend: “For many solo female travelers, there is a profound curiosity and an eagerness to truly live this stage of life. Travel becomes an unfolding experience, marked by purpose and passion.” This mindset is encapsulated in the phrase “If not now, when?”
The Rise of Solo Travel Among Older Women
A significant factor contributing to the increasing number of older women traveling alone stems from transformative life events. Many women in this demographic experience changes such as divorce, retirement, the loss of a spouse, or transitioning to an empty nest. Consequently, their 50s and 60s often represent newfound freedom, financial means, and the opportunity to explore the world solo.
The pursuit of meaningful experiences is gaining traction among successful women, who increasingly prioritize self-care and adventure over professional success. Deborah Dotson, host of the Senior Travel Adventures travel show, highlights this by stating, “I started traveling solo because I was tired of waiting for friends to join me.”
For many, solo travel provides the flexibility to explore at their own pace, enabling them to connect with new cultures while building confidence. Additionally, traveling during non-peak times often offers financial benefits.
Women are embracing travel as a means of self-discovery, enabling them to reclaim their identities and assert control over their lives. Shelley Marmor of DiscoverCars.com articulates this shift, stating: “Women over 50 are claiming the spaces previously unavailable to them; they seek either tranquility or adventure based on their past experiences.”
Community and Small-Group Experiences
Despite the inclination toward solo travel, many older women prefer the companionship of other like-minded travelers. The survey revealed that 48% of respondents had participated in women-only group trips, which offer a supportive experience for those new to traveling alone.
Solo cruising has emerged as a viable option for those looking for security and social interaction. Traditional cruises often impose solo supplements for single travelers, making dedicated solo travel options more appealing. Founder of Girls’ Guide to the World, Doni Belau, observes, “Women who travel solo often seek connection and joy through shared experiences, and they thrive on bonding.”
Redefining Luxury Travel
Older female travelers are redefining luxury, with many prioritizing experiences that enrich understanding and foster connection over extravagant amenities. The survey indicated that 27% of women would invest over €8,500 in a meaningful trip if it offered depth rather than indulgence. Furthermore, 45% required a private room when choosing group travel options.
Francesca Elisabetta Owens notes their preference for high-quality, comfortable accommodations, emphasizing, “They seek beautiful, clean, and well-designed spaces without distractions.”
Expert guidance also plays a significant role, as 41% value knowledgeable local guides, while 32% prioritize experiencing local cuisine. This demographic is increasingly willing to invest in experiences that foster rich narratives, recognizing the financial autonomy many have achieved.
Adventurous Holidays Gaining Popularity
Many older women are actively pursuing travel that challenges their physical and mental limits. Active holidays, particularly hiking and walking tours, have gained popularity, dispelling myths about older women’s physical capabilities. Nadine Gravis from 10Adventures reports that over 95% of older female travelers have opted for self-guided walking tours.
Noteworthy routes such as the Camino Frances showcase the adventurous spirit of these women, as demonstrated by a 70-year-old traveler who completed the route solo, marking a significant personal milestone.
A Focus on Cultural Immersion and Wellness
Cultural immersion ranked as a primary interest for 60% of respondents planning trips for 2026. Older women are focusing on authentic experiences that connect them meaningfully with the places they visit. Marmor notes that they seek activities such as food tours, local workshops, and leisurely explorations of bustling markets.
Hands-on activities, such as cooking classes on local farms and art workshops, are increasingly appealing. Owens highlights the joy of engaging in these organic processes alongside other women, fostering camaraderie and participatory experiences.
The trend toward wellness travel is also significant, with growing interest in restorative trips focused on mental and emotional balance. Such “calmcations” advocate for slower, more intentional travel, offering refreshing escapes from daily routines.
Shifting Perceptions of Older Women Travelers
Contrary to stereotypes, many older female solo travelers are looking for dynamic adventures rather than quiet museum visits. Marmor underscores that this demographic desires activities filled with intention and energy. “They’ll engage in tango classes or kayak excursions,” she remarks, emphasizing their tech-savviness and independence.
The misconception that older travelers are timid and need constant assistance is inaccurate. Many women in this demographic are experienced travelers who are ready to break free from societal constraints. Owens reflects, “They seek to fulfill their potential and have the means to create meaningful experiences as they enter this vibrant life stage.”
