Seniors Thrive with Fitness at Lake Charles’ Project Fit
LAKE CHARLES, La. – In an energetic gym setting, a remarkable group of women are demonstrating that age is no barrier to physical activity. At Project Fit, many participants, most of whom are in their late 80s or 90s, take part in a vibrant range of strength and balance exercises while music fills the air.
Functional Fitness Classes
Allie Davis, the owner of Project Fit, outlines the offerings available for seniors. “Our senior fitness class, known as functional fitness, occurs every Tuesday and Thursday at 10:15 AM. This program is designed for individuals aged 60 and older, with participants ranging from those in their 60s to members who are 94,” Davis explains.
A Journey Back in Time
Some attendees come with diverse athletic backgrounds. Geri Landry, for example, reminisces about her active days: “Cratic and I were the first two to letter in tennis at McNeese. I also played basketball there,” she shares, reflecting on her vibrant past.
More Than Just Exercise
For the members of this fitness community, the sessions extend beyond physical workouts. They emphasize camaraderie, joy, and the empowerment of maintaining physical strength long after their college days. Participants like Julie Miller and Jetta Vidrine express how the classes have pushed them out of their comfort zones.
- “I was never athletic. The thought of getting up to bat would terrify me, but I love dancing and staying in shape,” Miller notes.
- Vidrine adds, “My daughter enrolled me without my consent, but now everyone is so welcoming that you can only do what feels right for you.”
A Positive Atmosphere
The enthusiasm in the room reflects a shared belief: maintaining an active lifestyle can be a lifelong endeavor. As the members engage at Project Fit, they not only exercise but also exemplify a full and vibrant life, with spirits that remain youthful.
Joining the Community
Faye Saucier recalls her initial class: “I was initially just an observer, but once I saw how everyone interacted, I knew I had to join in.” Many members shared their appreciation for being in an environment surrounded by peers, with light-hearted activities like line dancing to conclude their workouts.
A Call to Action
Project Fit encourages more individuals to join their senior fitness classes, extending an invitation specifically to men as well. As community members continue to inspire each other, they are eager to welcome newcomers into this supportive fitness environment.
