DECATUR, Ala. — Women in Decatur are invited to participate in complimentary self-defense classes offered by the Decatur Police Department throughout June and July. The training aims to equip women with essential self-defense techniques through the Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D) program, which emphasizes valuable safety information to help prevent potential assaults.
These self-defense courses are tailored specifically for women and girls aged 12 and older, and each session has a cap of eight participants to ensure personalized attention. Each R.A.D. course consists of three consecutive training sessions, where all students are required to attend every class for a comprehensive experience.
Classes are scheduled on the following dates:
- June 9, 10, 11: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
- June 30, July 1, 2: 12 p.m. – 3 p.m.
- July 7, 8, 9: 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
- July 14, 15, 16: 12 p.m. – 3 p.m.
- July 29, 30, 31: 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
According to the Decatur Police Department, the program will be conducted by certified R.A.D. Instructor SRO R. Bradley, who will lead participants through a hands-on learning experience focused on practical self-defense techniques. Attendees are encouraged to wear gym attire during the classes, and it is advisable to bring athletic shoes, a water bottle, and a sweat towel.
The R.A.D program aims to enhance women’s self-defense options, empowering them in the event of an attack. Although the classes might be physically demanding, all women, regardless of fitness level, are encouraged to enroll.
Before attending, participants must complete an information form and a hold harmless release, which are available at the Decatur Police Department front desk. For those interested in the June sessions, applications need to be submitted by May 23, while the deadline for July sessions is June 20.
This initiative by the Decatur Police Department is an excellent opportunity for women and girls to learn vital skills that may enhance personal safety and confidence in their everyday lives.
