Empowering Women through Technology Solutions: UNICEF Venture Fund

By Wayan Vota on April 7, 2025

Digital Inclusion

The Digital Divide and Its Impact on Women

As technology rapidly evolves, it increasingly highlights the disparities in access and benefits among different populations. Women, particularly in developing economies, face significant barriers, limiting their access to education, employment, and financial resources.

  • 31% of women worldwide are not engaged in education, employment, or training.
  • 740 million women in developing nations lack access to banking services.
  • Annually, over 21 million adolescent girls in low- and middle-income countries become pregnant.
  • Only 2% of global medical research funding is focused on pregnancy, childbirth, and female reproductive health.

Introducing the UNICEF Venture Fund

The UNICEF Venture Fund is committed to advancing solutions that extend beyond healthcare to holistically empower women and girls. The Fund emphasizes the importance of recognizing unique challenges faced by women while addressing underlying social and economic factors that limit their agency and well-being.

Key Focus Areas of the Fund

UNICEF aims to support and validate technologies in three primary domains:

  1. Enhancing Health Outcomes: Development of digital health solutions focusing on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment tailored specifically for women. This includes AI-driven platforms targeting maternal, reproductive, and adolescent health, alongside on-demand referral services.
  2. Addressing Unique Challenges: Initiatives that work towards closing the gender data gap, improving accessibility for underserved communities, and developing culturally relevant solutions that resonate with women’s experiences.
  3. Social and Economic Empowerment: Expansion of financial opportunities, access to safe education and training, and bolstering women’s decision-making power and workforce participation.

Funding Opportunities Available

The UNICEF Venture Fund is offering up to $100,000 in equity-free funding for early-stage for-profit startups. This funding is aimed at ventures leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, data science, and blockchain to generate social impact.

Apply Now! The application deadline is May 8, 2025.
