Empowering Women Delegates at the CRC Synod
As the Christian Reformed Church (CRC) convenes its annual synod, the marked reduction in women delegates this year—only 18 compared to previous years—has prompted an emphasis on supporting and inspiring female leadership within the church community. The kickoff event, a women’s dinner, served as a platform to encourage those present while fostering pathways for future leaders.
Fostering Women Leadership
Lesli van Milligen, the director of Thrive, addressed an audience of approximately 25 attendees, including delegates, staff, and advisers. She highlighted the critical role of conveying the value of leadership to women within the church. “We won’t continue to get women coming if we’re not telling them that this is a worthwhile way to use their leadership,” she stated, urging the delegates to share their experiences—both challenging and transformative—during their time at synod.
Wisdom from Experience
Encouraging first-time attendees, van Milligen invited seasoned delegates to impart their wisdom. Marguerite Ridder, a two-time delegate and prayer intercessor, advised newcomers to document their thoughts before speaking, to avoid losing track in the moment. Sharon Jim, who has previously served as a delegate and women’s adviser, emphasized preparation and commitment: “You have a purpose, and that takes priority,” she asserted, reminding attendees to engage fully with their responsibilities.
Legacy and Inspiration
Sharing her own familial connection to the church, June Atsma, a first-time elder delegate, recounted memories of attending synod as a child. Her story underscored the importance of continuing dialogue on women’s roles in church governance, reflecting her excitement to participate in the process. “And now here I am,” Atsma remarked, capturing a sense of legacy and continuity.
Encouragement from Leaders
Carol Bremer-Bennett, director of World Renew, was also invited to inspire the attendees. She highlighted the broader global sisterhood of women leaders, reminding them, “You are not alone.” She underscored that leadership encompasses service, courage, and love, speaking to the importance of their roles within the church and community.
The Current State of Women Delegates
This year’s synod has seen participation from eleven classes that sent women as delegates, although some classes maintain restrictions on women serving in ecclesiastical roles. The CRC acknowledges different perspectives on women’s leadership in church settings, with a position statement that allows classes to operate according to their convictions. “All duly elected and ordained officebearers—men and women—may be delegated to synod,” the statement reads, affirming that participation should align with personal beliefs.
Looking Ahead
As the CRC prepares for Synod 2025, which will take place from June 13-19 at Redeemer University in Ancaster, Ontario, the commitment to fostering a supportive environment for women delegates remains crucial. Daily coverage will be provided by The Banner, alongside resources available at the CRC’s official synod website.
