Finding My Place in Perinatal Nursing
I always knew my calling was in the fetal assessment unit. Many patients and their families express that I’m precisely where I should be, and I couldn’t agree more; it’s undoubtedly the best decision I’ve made for my career.
A Journey of Compassion and Care
I embarked on my nursing career 23 years ago in high-risk labor and delivery, which provided the essential knowledge leading me to become a Perinatal Nurse Sonographer. For the last 15 years, I have been privileged to work in this vital role.
Supporting Women Through Pregnancy
My passion lies in perinatal nursing, particularly in supporting women during this transformative time. At the Fetal Assessment Unit of the Women’s Hospital HSC, our dedicated team offers fetal ultrasound and maternal care services. We encompass risk assessment, genetic testing, emotional support, counseling, education, treatment coordination, and intrauterine fetal procedures.
Creating a Safe Space for Patients
Understanding that many patients feel anxious during their visits, I strive to create an atmosphere of comfort. We prioritize continuity of care, especially for those facing challenges during pregnancy or grappling with anxiety from previous experiences. As a specialized nurse, I have the privilege of delivering ultrasound results in a compassionate manner, offering the reassurance our patients need.
Empathy in Patient Care
When interacting with my patients, particularly those facing difficulties, I often reflect, “What if this were my sister, my mother, or me? How would I wish to be treated?” Every individual deserves respect, kindness, and empathy. I take the time to actively listen, share in their grief, provide comforting hugs, and sometimes share tears. I want my patients to know they are seen, heard, and that their emotions are valid.
A Memorable Experience
Throughout my journey, I have encountered many remarkable individuals. One memory that remains etched in my heart is of a couple navigating immense adversity during their pregnancy. As they were preparing to leave the unit, the husband expressed, “I want you to know that throughout all of this, you have been a bright spot.” This affirmation reminds me of the impact I can have in people’s lives.
Celebrating Women on International Women’s Day
It feels serendipitous to share my story on International Women’s Day, which also happens to be my birthday. This day celebrates women globally and promotes gender equality in professional realms. I am honored to work with an incredible team of women who are intelligent, compassionate, capable, and independent, all dedicated to saving lives. It’s empowering to reflect on how far we’ve come from a time when this field was predominantly male-dominated.
The Strength of Our Team
Daily, I draw inspiration from our cohesive team as we support each other through the unique challenges of our specialized unit. I genuinely love my job, finding fulfillment in helping others, even in their darkest moments. On tough days, I remind myself of the bright spot I strive to be.
Honoring Women in Healthcare
