The Empowering Side of Fangirling in K-Pop Culture
Transformation Through Inspiration
Engaging deeply with K-pop has prompted many fans to explore new aspects of their lives. Khoo, a devoted follower of Taemin, exemplifies this trend. She notes, “I’ve started dressing up in styles inspired by Taemin’s different concepts in his music videos. And wanting to ‘match his energy’, I’ve also started working out, in pursuit of becoming a better version of me. I have since lost almost 10kg.” This change underscores how admiration for an artist can motivate fans to pursue healthier lifestyles and personal development.
Additionally, Khoo’s inspiration extends to her musical aspirations as well. Observing Taemin’s piano performances spurred her to finally pursue piano lessons, fulfilling a long-held dream.
Similarly, Lim May San, a 42-year-old tech professional, draws motivation from her favorite band, Day6. She shares, “It reminds me to be a better person for society, as much as I can,” illustrating how the work ethic and humility of K-pop groups can influence fans to adopt more positive values in their personal lives.
Lee from The Psychology Practice highlights this phenomenon, stating, “This form of inspiration and motivation may serve as a catalyst for change and can be empowering.”
Building a Community Among Fans
Social media platforms and online forums have greatly facilitated the formation of fan communities, enabling older fangirls to share their experiences more comfortably. These connections are vital for many fans, providing a supportive space for collective enthusiasm and discussion.
As one fangirl describes her experience, “Among my WhatsApp group chats, the one I have with my fellow K-pop loving friends is the most active. If we’re not sending memes, photos and videos of our favourite idols, then we’re discussing the best ways to camp out for tickets for the next concert.”
This sense of camaraderie has allowed her to meet diverse fans, including an American Exo-L (the name for fans of Exo) whom she connected with during Kai’s solo concert in Seoul.
