Exploring Love through the Lens of a Trans Woman
In her personal quest for love as a trans woman, author and journalist Shon Faye has uncovered universal feelings of alienation, objectification, inadequacy, and the weight of past relationship failures. These experiences form the foundation of her latest book, which delves into these shared emotional journeys.
“Trans women are not considered the subject matter of books about love,” reflects Shon Faye. “But the reality of my life shares many commonalities with women who write extensively on this theme.” Photo: Sophie Davidson
Love in Exile: A Personal Journey
While crafting her book, Love in Exile, Faye encountered what she describes as a “romantic disappointment.” She shares, “For a few months, it really devastated me; it was a situation that didn’t unfold as I had hoped.”
This moment reminded her, with an endearing smile, that dedicating years to writing about love did not render her any more of an expert on the subject. “Love is ever-changing. My expectations and desires in romance at 36, approaching 37, are markedly different from those of a 22-year-old, and that’s entirely valid. Who knows where my journey in love will guide me?”
