Elon Women’s Soccer Team Continues Unbeaten Streak with Dominant Win
Elon University’s women’s soccer team remains on a remarkable streak, demonstrating their prowess by securing a 6-0 victory against South Carolina State on Wednesday evening at Rudd Field. This victory marks the end of an unbeaten non-conference run, leaving the team with an impressive record of 6 wins, 0 losses, and 2 draws.
Record-Setting Performance
The shutout win not only showcases the team’s skill but also set a new program record for consecutive clean sheets, marking the seventh in a row. This achievement surpasses the previous record of six, established during Elon’s inaugural season in 1986. Goaltenders Anna Hamner and Naomi Person shared duties in net, with Hamner making the only save needed during the match.
Scoring Highlights
Five players contributed to the scoring, with Gabby Hoschek leading the charge with two goals. In total, 11 players registered either goals or assists during the match, showcasing a collaborative offensive effort. Both Hoschek and Isa Murdock emerged as key contributors, with four and three points, respectively.
Game Summary
The scoring opened in the 31st minute after an earlier goal by Abby Brinker was disallowed. After a blocked shot, Hoschek capitalized, finding the bottom left corner to put Elon ahead.
A key moment came shortly after when South Carolina State’s Simone Miranda received a red card, forcing her team to continue with ten players for the remainder of the match.
Elon didn’t relent and added their second goal in the 59th minute through Jess Beck, who executed a well-placed shot into the bottom right corner. Hoschek then scored her second from a free kick in the 65th minute, further extending Elon’s lead.
As the match progressed, Murdock added a fourth goal with a smooth finish off two precise passes, followed by goals from Grace Gelhaus and Jillian Hellner in the closing minutes, making it a dominating 6-0 result.
Statistical Milestones
The clean sheet against South Carolina State extends Elon’s shutout streak to 643 minutes and 28 seconds of play, nearly 11 hours without conceding a goal. The team now shares the distinction of leading Division I women’s soccer with seven shutouts alongside Tennessee.
Player Performances
Hamner played the first half, while Person made her debut in the second, contributing to the team’s defensive success. The Phoenix outshot their opponents 31 to 2, making this their first encounter with over 30 shots since a previous game against Hampton.
Notably, Hoschek’s brace was her first since the season opener, and Murdock now leads the team with 10 points for the season. Several players achieved personal milestones, such as Maya Abousaab recording her first career assist.
Looking Ahead
With the conclusion of the non-conference schedule, Elon will shift focus to Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Their next match is scheduled against Hofstra on September 18, followed by a visit to defending champions Stony Brook on September 21.
