Pioneering Women in STEM: Empowering Future Leaders in Science
The Swedish Institute’s Scholarship Initiative
The Swedish Institute (SI) has launched an innovative scholarship program dubbed Pioneering Women in STEM. This initiative seeks to enhance women’s involvement in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by fostering their leadership and performance.
Spotlight on Katrina Baladjay
Among the scholarship recipients is Katrina Baladjay, who will be attending Luleå University of Technology in Sweden. Baladjay is set to pursue a master’s degree in Space Science and Technology. She is dedicated to advancing space industries to benefit environmental sustainability and future generations.
“I’m eager to deepen my understanding of space physics, answer fundamental questions about the universe, and inspire the next generation of young female scientists in physics,” Baladjay expressed. “This is possible in Sweden, a country with a strong space research background and a deep commitment to gender equality.”
Fully Funded Opportunities
The SI plays a vital role in promoting Sweden internationally, overseeing initiatives in collaboration, global development, and education. Besides the Pioneering Women in STEM program, it offers the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals, designed for aspiring leaders focused on implementing Sustainable Development Goals in their home nations.
This fall semester, 54 Filipino students have secured places in various Swedish universities, with 11 awarded fully funded scholarships from SI. These students will study diverse fields including public health, sustainable engineering, and space science.
The Value of a Swedish Education
Sweden’s educational framework is notable for its emphasis on collaboration, often described through the ‘quadruple helix’ model, engaging government, the private sector, civil society, and academia in addressing global challenges. Ambassador Anna Ferry remarked, “Filipino students, with their unique perspectives, creativity, and resilience, make significant contributions to Sweden’s sustainability and research and development efforts.”
Many graduates join the Swedish Alumni Network to celebrate their experiences and maintain connections with Sweden.
Chris Eugenio, chairperson of the Swedish Alumni Network-Philippines and a recipient of the SI Management Programme in Sustainability, noted, “Sweden is a fantastic destination for studying abroad, offering world-class education with a strong emphasis on innovation and research.”
Research Investment and Global Standing
Sweden is home to nearly 50 universities, many of which provide programs taught in English. Prestigious institutions such as Lund University, Uppsala University, and Karolinska Institute rank among the best globally.
Since 1997, approximately 630 Filipinos have advanced their education in Sweden. From 2019 to 2025, 49 Filipinos received the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals, with a notable 45 percent of recipients being women. Overall, 117 Filipinos have benefited from SI’s various scholarship programs.
With an investment of around 3.5 percent of its GDP in research and development—one of the highest globally—Sweden is recognized for its leadership in sectors like environmental technology and life sciences.
