SAN ANTONIO – A Night to Remember for Alyssa Durazo-Frescas
In an exhilarating showcase on national television via ESPN, Grand Canyon University’s senior guard, Alyssa Durazo-Frescas, claimed victory in the Celsius Women’s 3-Point Championship on Thursday night, solidifying her status as the finest 3-point shooter in Lopes history. With an impressive record of 152 3-pointers made in a season, Durazo-Frescas entered the competition with high expectations, displaying her remarkable accuracy and smooth shooting style at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, where she went head-to-head against seven of the best sharpshooters in the nation.
“I honestly blanked out during the whole competition, so I’m not really sure what happened,” she told ESPN analyst Jay Bilas, showing her humble demeanor amidst triumph.
The audience watched as Durazo-Frescas scored 19 points in the first round, followed by 14 points in the semifinals. She electrified fans with a stunning 23-point performance in the final round, defeating Alabama’s Aaliyah Nye.
Each competitor took 25 shots, consisting of 20 regular orange balls worth one point each and five gold money balls valued at two points. After entering the final two racks with just 10 points in the first round, Durazo-Frescas hit eight of her next ten attempts, easily securing her place in the semifinals.
As the nation’s leader in 3-pointers made per game, Durazo-Frescas tied with Creighton’s Lauren Jenson at 14 points by the end of the semifinals but advanced on the tiebreaker due to her superior shooting performance.
The thrilling final round had Durazo-Frescas squaring off against the impressive Nye, who ranked third nationally with an average of 3.4 made 3-pointers per game, just behind Durazo-Frescas’ leading average of 3.9.
The California native demonstrated the finesse that contributed to the Lopes’ remarkable season, leading to a 32-3 record and capturing the WAC Tournament title with her All-WAC Tournament team performance. In the final, she made 18 of 25 attempts, including all five money balls, matching the highest score of any round in the competition.

“That ball isn’t even touching the rim,” ESPN analyst Ron Slay commented in awe.
Durazo-Frescas began the final round by sinking her first five shots, proudly displaying the champion’s chain in front of her mother, Monica, who cheered her on from the stands.
“All glory to God,” Durazo-Frescas expressed with gratitude. “It feels incredible to win, but all the glory goes to Him.”
This victory marks the second consecutive year that a Lopes basketball player has taken home honors at the State Farm College Slam Dunk and 3-Point Championships, following Gabe McGlothan’s triumph in the dunk competition last year at Global Credit Union Arena.
