Understanding the Impact of Chronic Foot Pain on Women’s Health

Foot pain is often viewed as a minor inconvenience; however, it can indicate serious underlying health issues. Dr. Garima Gupta, a Senior Consultant at Nivaan Care, emphasizes the need to pay attention to chronic foot pain, especially in women, linking it to various health problems including posture, pelvic health, and hormonal imbalances.

According to Dr. Gupta, chronic foot pain often goes unnoticed or is dismissed as common. Nonetheless, it can manifest in ailments ranging from discomfort in high-heeled shoes to stiffness in the soles, particularly noticeable in the morning or after prolonged standing. This type of pain can affect more than mobility; it has broader implications for overall women’s health.

Identifying Causes of Foot Pain

1. Hormonal Fluctuations

Hormones like relaxin and estrogen can influence ligament laxity during menstruation, pregnancy, and perimenopause. This can lead to conditions such as flatfoot or plantar fasciitis, thereby affecting one’s posture and gait.

Solutions: Women’s foot arches require special attention during hormonal changes. Consider supportive footwear or customized orthotics. Incorporating yoga poses like Tadasana can help maintain foot muscle strength.

2. Prolonged Standing

Cultural factors, particularly in India, can lead to chronic foot pain due to long hours spent standing, often exacerbated by unsuitable footwear and hard flooring.

Solutions: Taking regular breaks, using textured foot rollers for massage, and incorporating silicone heel cups or gel inserts can help alleviate discomfort. Additionally, spending time barefoot on natural surfaces can help with bodily alignment.

3. Conditions such as PCOS

Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) might experience unexplained foot pain due to systemic inflammation and insulin resistance.

Solutions: A comprehensive approach that includes dietary changes, magnesium supplementation, and low-impact exercises like aqua therapy can decrease joint stress and enhance insulin sensitivity.

1. Altered Posture

Chronic foot pain can gradually alter body posture. Over time, this can have psychological effects, including changing self-image and lowering confidence levels. Research indicates a correlation between posture and cortisol levels, impacting mood and hormonal balance.

Solutions: Engaging in Pilates or posture-alignment therapies, along with simple exercises like wall angels or neck stretching, can greatly benefit posture and mental health.

2. Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

Changes in gait due to foot pain can engage core stabilizing muscles incorrectly, leading to pelvic floor issues such as tightness or weakness.

Solutions: Consultation with a physiotherapist can help realign foot posture and pelvic alignment. Techniques like deep breathing combined with foot exercises can promote better pelvic floor activity.
