Wesleyan Advances to Sweet 16 After Victory Over Babson

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The No. 6 Wesleyan women’s lacrosse team secured a place in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16, overcoming No. 16 Babson with a final score of 15-9. The victory allows Wesleyan to continue its successful postseason run with a record of 14-5 this season.

Key Performers

Sam DeLeo (’25) and Dylan Green (’26) were pivotal in this match, combining for a remarkable seven goals and five assists. Highlights of their performances included:

  • DeLeo recorded a personal best of seven points with three goals and four assists.
  • Green contributed four goals, one assist, and led the team with four draw controls.
  • Kiara Tangney (’25) scored three goals, marking her 100th career point, becoming only the 23rd player in team history to do so.

Game Progression

The game began with Babson’s Clara Connolly scoring first, but Wesleyan quickly retaliated with Green tying the game just seconds later. The Cards surged ahead, taking control of the match with a 9-0 scoring run that lasted through much of the first half:

  • End of First Quarter: Wesleyan led 5-2, buoyed by goals from Tangney and Cummings.
  • Second Quarter Surge: Six consecutive goals pushed the lead to 11-2 before Babson responded with a player-up goal.
  • Continued Dominance: Wesleyan went on to extend its lead to 15-3 in the third quarter.

Defensive Strategy

Wesley’s defense efficiently contained Babson’s Amelia Novitch, who entered the match after a standout performance in the previous round. Despite late-game scoring from Babson, Wesleyan’s defense held firm through crucial moments.

This victory marks Wesleyan’s sixth consecutive advancement to the regional semifinals. They will face No. 23 Rowan for the first time in program history on Saturday.
