Missy Doherty Steps Down as Penn State Women’s Lacrosse Head Coach

Penn State University has announced that Missy Doherty will be stepping down from her role as head coach of the women’s lacrosse team to explore new professional opportunities. Assistant coach Steph Lazo has been appointed as the interim head coach while the university initiates a national search for a permanent replacement.

Acknowledgment of Contributions

In a statement, Pat Kraft, the Vice President of Athletics at Penn State, expressed gratitude for Doherty’s 15 years of dedicated service to the program. “We appreciate Missy’s contributions and her commitment to the development of young women in our program,” Kraft remarked. “She ensured they had a world-class experience during their tenure and prepared them for life beyond lacrosse.” Kraft extended best wishes to Doherty and her family for their future endeavors.

Reflections on Tenure

Doherty, reflecting on her time at Penn State, expressed pride in the accomplishments made during her tenure. “I have enjoyed my time in Happy Valley and am so proud of all we have achieved,” she stated. She thanked Kraft for his support and acknowledged Tim Curley for recruiting her to the university. Doherty expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside exceptional assistant coaches, athletes, and staff, emphasizing the holistic development of the players both on and off the field.

Coaching Achievements

  • Completion of 15 years as head coach with a record of 155 wins and 107 losses.
  • Successful NCAA Tournament appearances for the Nittany Lions, including back-to-back National Semifinal appearances in 2016 and 2017.
  • Secured the ALC title in 2013 and earned the Big Ten Coach of the Year honor in 2015.
  • Coached 62 all-conference selections, including 44 who were named All-Big Ten, as well as 10 conference major award winners and 23 All-Americans.
  • Mentored 109 distinguished scholars in the Big Ten.

Doherty’s departure marks a significant moment in Penn State women’s lacrosse, as the program looks forward to a new chapter while continuing to build on the foundation laid during her tenure.

Next Steps for Penn State Lacrosse

As the search for a new head coach begins, the Penn State community anticipates a seamless transition, aiming to maintain the program’s competitive edge and commitment to athlete development. Further updates on the search for Doherty’s replacement will be forthcoming.
