Rising Celibacy Among Young Women: A Response to Hookup Culture

Mandana Zarghami, a 29-year-old from Florida, made a conscious decision to embrace celibacy, spending four consecutive years without intimate relationships. This choice reflects a broader trend among young women in her generation, who view modern hookup culture as detrimental to meaningful connections.

The Impact of Hookup Culture

Zarghami asserts that the prevailing dating landscape, driven by dating apps, primarily serves the interests of men:

“Hookup culture doesn’t benefit women in any way — it only benefits the man.”

She argues that casual encounters diminish the significance of true intimacy, making it harder to experience genuine connections with future partners.

Concerns from Peers

Kayla Caputo, another 29-year-old from New Jersey, echoes Zarghami’s sentiments. She feels that the emphasis on casual relationships overshadows the true purpose of dating:

“It’s like people are so trained now to just ask you to come home with them — it’s so bizarre.”

Caputo claims that engaging in casual sex can cloud one’s judgment about potential partners and their intentions.

The Celibacy Movement

Zarghami is part of a substantial movement among millennials and Generation Z women who are opting out of sex as they navigate a frustrating dating scene. Unlike previous generations who may have linked abstinence to religious beliefs or purity pledges, this group is choosing celibacy as a conscious reaction to dating norms.

Statistics on Sexlessness

The trend is notable. Research from the Institute for Family Studies indicates a significant decline in sexual activity among adults. From 2010 to 2024, the percentage of individuals aged 18 to 29 who reported not having sex has doubled, rising from 12% to 24%.

Moreover, sexlessness among young women has surged by approximately 50%, illustrating a growing trend of abstinence in response to modern dating challenges.

Personal Journeys of Celibacy

Zarghami’s decision stemmed from a series of unsuccessful relationships marked by emotional immaturity and lack of commitment:

“As much as you want to blame that other species, you also have to take accountability for why you’re allowing certain people into your life.”

She initiated a personal plan of abstinence, committing to a year free from dating apps and physical intimacy. This period of reflection eventually extended to four years, proving transformative for her understanding of relationships.

Empowerment Through Celibacy

Caputo, who has also chosen to be celibate in recent months, views this lifestyle as empowering. She finds that being upfront about her boundaries helps filter out individuals whose intentions are purely physical.

“I literally say it so bluntly. That kind of allows me to feel not only like I’m in charge…”

Such straightforward communication not only reinforces their agency but also aids in identifying partners interested in meaningful connections.

Reconnecting with Oneself

The decision to embrace celibacy has led many women, including Ema Skauminaite, to strengthen their friendships and develop a deeper understanding of themselves:

“I have learned so much about myself, about relationships, how it works, and how I feel about the whole thing.”

Women in this movement report improved intuition regarding relationship dynamics and feel more fulfilled by nurturing friendships rather than pursuing fleeting romantic encounters.

Conclusions and Forward Outlook

As more young women opt for celibacy, they are reshaping the conversation around dating. While remaining open to romance, they prioritize their emotional well-being and seek deeper connections before engaging in intimacy. The rise of this movement suggests a potential shift in societal norms regarding relationships and sex in the years to come.
