Direct Relief Awarded Major Funding to Enhance Women’s Health
Direct Relief has been honored as an awardee of the Action for Women’s Health initiative, a global program that launched in 2024 with a budget of $250 million aimed at improving women’s mental and physical health. This recognition comes as a crucial step in addressing healthcare inequalities that disproportionately affect women worldwide.
Addressing Healthcare Gaps for Women
Despite representing half of the global population, women frequently encounter significant disparities in healthcare funding, access, and research. These issues result in many lacking essential health services, particularly in underserved regions.
Essential Resources for Maternal and Child Health
Direct Relief’s maternal and child health program plays a vital role in bridging these gaps by equipping midwives and frontline health workers with necessary tools, medications, and supplies for safer pregnancies and deliveries. Key components of this initiative include:
- Midwife kits: Each kit aids in supporting up to 50 safe births.
- Perinatal health kits: These are stocked with critical medications and tools to treat life-threatening conditions impacting women and newborns.
In the year 2024, Direct Relief successfully provided over 1,000 maternal and child health kits to healthcare partners across 27 nations, facilitating more than 65,000 safe births, surgeries, and pregnancy interventions. With this new funding, the organization aims to further expand access, targeting the distribution of more than 6,000 midwife kits over the next three years, which is expected to support approximately 300,000 safe deliveries.
Leadership Insights on Healthcare Needs
“We are deeply honored to be selected as an awardee of Action for Women’s Health at such a pivotal moment,” said Amy Weaver, Chief Executive Officer at Direct Relief. “The need for high-quality care during pregnancy and childbirth is growing rapidly in underserved communities around the world. This recognition and support will enable Direct Relief to expand its work to reach more women, more midwives, and more health facilities with the tools needed to save lives. While this award provides a powerful boost, it also underscores just how much more must be done to ensure every woman and every newborn has the chance for a safe, healthy future.”
Selection Process and Future Plans
Direct Relief’s recognition as one of the 80 awardees followed a stringent evaluation process involving experts and peers in global health, reviewing over 4,000 applications spanning 119 countries. The Action for Women’s Health initiative is supported by Pivotal, a group of impact organizations founded by Melinda French Gates, and managed by Lever for Change, a recognized entity for fostering solutions to pressing global issues.
Building on this acknowledgment, Direct Relief is committed to scaling its maternal and child health program to meet the increasing demand for essential services across the globe’s most underserved areas. While this funding is a meaningful milestone, it also highlights the extensive work still required to fill gaps in maternal healthcare.
Commitment to Health Equity
Direct Relief aims to strengthen local partnerships, enhance supply chains, and empower midwives with the necessary tools to provide lifesaving care. Through these efforts, the organization seeks to promote health equity, affirming that every woman, regardless of her location, deserves the opportunity for a safe birth and a healthy beginning for her child.
