Martina Navratilova Expresses Frustration Over Political Silence on Trans Issues in Women’s Sports
Tennis legend Martina Navratilova, an openly lesbian athlete married to a woman, has voiced her anger regarding the Republican Party’s vocal stance on transgender athletes in women’s sports, contrasting it with what she perceives as a muted response from the Democratic Party, to which she has long belonged.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Navratilova highlighted her discontent by sharing an image of Republican Representative Nancy Mace from South Carolina, who was photographed with the advocacy group Gays Against Groomers. She held a shirt that said “Save Girls’ Sports.”
“I am extremely frustrated that Republicans have seized this issue – shame on all the elected Democrats who remain silent on the matter!!! #whataboutthewomen,” she stated.
Navratilova has been a long-time advocate for fair competition in sports, having criticized swimmer Lia Thomas in 2022 for competing against female athletes while identifying as a transgender woman.
“This isn’t about excluding transgender women from ever winning. It’s about not allowing them to compete when they wouldn’t have been contenders as men,” she explained. “The goal is to keep the competition as close as it would have been had they been born biologically female.”
She added, “There’s controversy even surrounding the term ‘biological females.’ People resist using that language. I’m at a loss for what else to say.”
Navratilova also made an appearance at the Independent Women’s Forum’s “Take Back Title IX” rally in June, asserting that equitable integration of transgender individuals into women’s sports is “not feasible.”
“As progressives and women, we initially sought every possible way to include trans-identified males in women’s sports. However, the more we explored how to level the playing field, the more we realized it simply isn’t achievable in a fair manner,” she noted. “Now, our perspective has shifted significantly.”
“The backlash from the left has been harsh — labels such as bigot, transphobe, Nazi, fascist, and communist have been thrown at us. I find it appalling that those on the left, including my own allies, are turning against women who advocate for female rights based on sex,” she added.
