Overview of Women’s Participation in STEM Fields

The National Statistics and Information Bureau (ONEI) has reported a significant increase in the number of women involved in science and technology activities in Cuba. In 2023, over 50,000 women participated in various technical, administrative, and related roles, marking the highest figure recorded in the past three years.

Trends in Female Employment in Science and Technology

Specifically, the 2023 data revealed that approximately 50,633 women were employed in these sectors. This represents a notable rise from previous years, showcasing a trend of growth:

  • 2020: 49,958 women
  • 2021: 42,623 women
  • 2022: 48,088 women

Educational Attainment and Workforce Composition

The total number of female workers in science and technology reached 91,130 in 2023. Among these, a significant 54,503 held higher education degrees, including many in research positions such as professors, technologists, and technicians.

Significance of the Findings

This upward trend reflects a broader commitment to advancing gender equality in science and technology fields in Cuba. The growing representation of women in these areas is indicative of changing societal norms and increased opportunities for professional development.
