On February 11, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel took to X to honor the invaluable contributions of women scientists in Cuba. This year’s theme, “Building a Future for Women in Science,” underscores the essential role women play within the scientific community.

President Díaz-Canel highlighted that “more than half of Cuban scientists embody the face and spirit of a woman,” commending their exceptional dedication and talent as role models for the younger generation of girls aspiring to enter the sciences.

Accompanying the President’s remarks was a tweet from the Ministry of Science, Technology, and the Environment, which celebrated the crucial role of women in advancing science and technology in Cuba.
A Commitment to Equality
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to ensuring full and equitable participation of women and girls in the scientific domain, which currently sees a remarkable 53% representation of females in research roles.
Recognition by the United Nations
The United Nations General Assembly recognizes February 11 as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science to acknowledge the significant roles women have played throughout history in vital fields such as medicine, physics, and technology.
