Cumberland Women’s Basketball Opens Season with Impressive 87-70 Victory Over Oakwood

Game Overview

The Cumberland Phoenix women’s basketball team commenced their 2025-26 season with a confident performance, defeating Oakwood University (Ala.) 87-70 at the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena. This victory marks a strong start for the team as they look to build momentum throughout the season.

Performance Highlights

Cumberland emerged with a shooting efficiency of 40%, completing 28 of 70 attempts. From beyond the arc, the team made 11 out of 31 shots, resulting in a 35.5% success rate. They were also effective from the free-throw line, hitting 20 of 28 attempts (71.4%).

Rebounding and Defense

The Phoenix excelled on the boards, claiming a 50-40 advantage in rebounds, including 20 on the offensive end. This prowess led to 15 points from second-chance opportunities. Defensively, they pressured Oakwood into 19 turnovers, converting these into 24 points, and scored 34 points in the paint while also securing 41 points from the bench.

Individual Performances

Leading the charge was Braley Bushman with 20 points, shooting 5-of-9 and efficiently hitting 8-of-11 free throws. Maddie Brillhart supported her efforts with 14 points, including four three-pointers. Notably, Ty Buckley recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while freshman Julia Varpness contributed 12 points and grabbed nine boards in her collegiate debut. Emaleigh Tarpley added 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Other contributors included Faith Colston with six points, five rebounds, and three assists.

Oakwood’s Performance

On the opposing side, Oakwood recorded 39.4% shooting from the field, hitting 26 of 66 attempts. Their three-point shooting struggled at 23.8%, with just 5-of-21 made. The Ambassadors went 13-of-24 (54.2%) from the free-throw line. Despite securing 40 rebounds, they faced challenges, committing 19 turnovers and 22 fouls throughout the game. Late in the fourth quarter, they found scoring rhythm, tallying 30 points.

Key Players for Oakwood

Trenisha Adams and Alecia Reasor led the Ambassadors with 16 points each, with Reasor additionally achieving four rebounds and an impressive 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. Saniya Keys contributed 13 points and four rebounds, while Jatya Lester added 10 points and four boards.

Game Progression

The scoring began with Buckley hitting free throws, catalyzing a 6-2 run. Tarpley quickly followed with two layups. After Oakwood’s initial three-pointer, Colston responded with one of her own. Varpness showcased her skills, scoring five points in a single play to establish a 15-9 lead for Cumberland as the first quarter concluded.

In the second quarter, the Phoenix showcased their dominance, outscoring Oakwood 30-9, expanding their lead to 53-24 by halftime. Bushman was critical during this stretch, scoring 13 points. Cumberland’s defensive pressure was relentless, leading to multiple turnovers and transition baskets.

Final Summary

Despite Oakwood’s late-game surge in the fourth quarter, outscoring Cumberland 30-13, the Phoenix’s strong early efforts ensured a sound victory, starting the season at 1-0. Next, Cumberland will face Bryan College in a road match on Monday at 5:30 p.m., looking to continue their winning ways.
