Inspiration and Strength: Zoe McCurdy’s Journey to Fitness

Zoe McCurdy, a resident of East Cork, exemplifies how individuals can embrace fitness and health at any life stage. This 52-year-old mother of three has balanced the responsibilities of motherhood with a flourishing career as a personal trainer and athlete, proving a commitment to personal wellness is achievable.

Embarking on a Fitness Journey

Although Zoe only began her serious engagement with strength training and fitness in her 40s, she emphasizes the transformative power of taking that initial step. “You just have to take that first important step,” she asserts, encouraging others to embark on their journeys.

After the birth of her youngest daughter, Zoe recognized a desire to achieve better health. She initially ventured into running and fitness classes but faced challenges due to knee surgeries that affected her mobility. A pivotal moment came when she sought advice from physiotherapist Barry Mulcahy, which led her to discover her passion for strength training.

A Multifaceted Career

Zoe’s professional undertakings are as diverse as her achievements. In addition to being a powerlifter and bodybuilder, she operates a successful business offering personal training, group classes, and sports massage therapy. Her credentials include being an internationally recognized athlete and an award-winning bodybuilder.

“I see myself as a role model, not just to my girls but to anyone who wants to take ownership of their health and future self,” she states, reflecting her commitment to empowering others. Zoe aims to inspire those at various life stages—particularly women facing transitions such as adolescence, menopause, or mid-life shifts.

The Importance of Community and Support

Zoe attributes her success to the positive community surrounding her during her rehabilitation phase. “I was surrounded by positive people encouraging me to do well,” she recalls, highlighting the significant impact of a supportive network in one’s fitness journey.

Proven Results and Ongoing Goals

Now at 52, Zoe is not only an accomplished athlete holding multiple titles but also an advocate for fitness as a lifestyle. She currently holds both the European record for the deadlift and the world record for overall performance. In August, she was named the INNFPF deadlift champion.

Her mission is clear: “I want to encourage, motivate, and empower individuals of all ages and fitness levels to reach their potential,” she asserts. She believes everyone can enhance their lives once they take that crucial first step.

Guidance for Fitness at Every Age

Zoe emphasizes that fitness should be tailored according to life stages:

  • Children: Make activities playful to cultivate a love for movement.
  • 20s-30s: Combine strength and cardiovascular workouts to build a solid foundation.
  • 40s-50s: Prioritize strength training and low-impact cardio for heart health.
  • Over 60: Continue weight lifting and incorporate balance exercises for daily functionality.

“The best workout is the one you enjoy and stick to. That’s the secret to staying fit for life,” Zoe states, underscoring a fundamental truth about sustained fitness.
