Breaking Barriers on International Women’s Day
Despite significant strides towards equality, women still encounter numerous obstacles in their professional and social lives. The recent celebration of International Women’s Day served as a poignant reminder of both our achievements and the remaining challenges at hand.
The Challenge of Advocacy
As a member of the community striving to protect women’s rights and promote equality, I take pride in standing alongside women who empower one another. However, this commitment has often resulted in facing harsh criticism, harassment, and even physical threats.
Debate vs. Intimidation
While political discourse often invites criticism and opposing views—an essential aspect of democracy—there is a troubling trend where this discussion transforms into attempts to stifle voices, silence individuals, and instill fear.
The Gendered Nature of Abuse
This troubling phenomenon does not only disproportionately impact women; much of the abuse is specifically directed at them because they are women. From the moment I took office, I was bombarded with negativity. The nature of the abuse I received was deeply unsettling, and it’s challenging to ascertain whether it was due to my political affiliation, sexual orientation, or my gender.
Impact on Engagement
Over the years, the intensity of the abuse has shifted, yet it has certainly affected my willingness to engage openly on social media. The constant awareness of potential backlash influences how I share my thoughts and opinions online.
Consequences of Online Anonymity
The veil of anonymity on social media emboldens individuals to launch attacks without fear of repercussions. Receiving abuse in person allows for some level of confrontation, unlike the vitriol spewed in online spaces, where threats can be particularly severe.
Threats to Safety
Women, unfortunately, often endure threats of violence and sexual assault that are far graver than mere insults. I personally experienced a disturbing online attack that warned I would be “set alight” if I returned to my hometown of Springburn.
The Burden of Harassment
This issue transcends simple heckling or insults commonplace in political life. There have been instances where police involvement was necessary, and I’ve had to enhance security measures at my home due to persistent threats.
The Eerie Nature of Surveillance
Encounters where my shopping choices were tracked and posted online have left me feeling highly unsettled. Such behavior is not merely an inconvenience; it invites invasive scrutiny into my daily life.
The Gender Disparity in Criticism
Although male politicians also face abuse, research indicates that women often receive remarks that are more harmful, degrading, and misogynistic. Consequently, I largely avoid reading comments about my posts.
Encouraging Empowerment
It is disheartening that harassment could deter many women from pursuing election opportunities. Nevertheless, I remain steadfast in advocating for the rights of women and girls, and I pledge to stand firmly against this unacceptable behavior.
