Mercer Women’s Basketball Opens Home Season with Loss to Clemson
The Mercer Bears faced a tough start to their home season in women’s basketball, suffering a 72-51 defeat against the Clemson Tigers on November 6. This match was the Bears’ second of the season, bringing their record to 1-1, while Clemson improved to 2-0.
Game Overview
In the first half, Mercer managed to stay competitive, trailing by just 11 points at halftime. However, Clemson increased their lead significantly in the final period. The Bears struggled offensively, shooting only 33% from the field and 38% from three-point range. Mercer’s defense held Clemson to just five points off turnovers, while they capitalized on 13 points from Tiger turnovers despite committing six turnovers themselves.
Coach Comments and Fan Reactions
Under the leadership of Head Coach Michelle Clark-Heard, the Bears demonstrated commendable defensive efforts and rebounding skills throughout the game. The attendance at Hawkins Arena was modest but included dedicated fans like Patricia Griffin, who expressed disappointment in the team’s performance. “They’re wearing all this kinesiology tape and knee pads and all kinds of stuff but they still can’t do nothing. They’re throwing the ball everywhere but the net,” said Griffin.
Despite her disappointment, Griffin remained committed to supporting the team: “I’m disappointed, of course. No one likes seeing their team get thrashed at home. Especially by a school like Clemson, you know. SoCon is no joke.”
Clemson’s Dominance
Clemson Head Coach Shawn Poppie maintained an energetic presence on the sidelines, encouraging his players to remain aggressive defensively. His strategies paid off, as the Tigers’ assertive play overwhelmed the Bears, preventing any significant comeback as time wound down.
Poppie, now in his second year as head coach at Clemson, brought prior experience from his tenure at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga—another Southern Conference team—which informed his understanding of the Bears’ gameplay.
Upcoming Games
Looking ahead, the Bears aim to rebound in their next matchup against Gardner-Webb University on November 10. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off at Hawkins Arena.
