SNP Launches Mentoring Scheme Honoring Christina McKelvie
Introduction
In a heartfelt tribute to the late Christina McKelvie, former Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Hamilton, Larkhall & Stonehouse, the SNP is establishing a mentoring program dedicated to empowering women in politics.
About Christina McKelvie
The respected politician represented her constituency for 14 of her 18 years at Holyrood and held various ministerial roles within the Scottish Government. Sadly, McKelvie passed away at the age of 57 due to breast cancer in March 2023.
The Mentoring Initiative
The “Lead the Change: Christina McKelvie Women in Politics” scheme aims to encourage female participation in politics, particularly among those from underrepresented and working-class backgrounds. The program will provide structured mentorship, educational opportunities, and skills development.
Keith Brown, SNP depute leader and McKelvie’s partner, announced the initiative at the party’s conference in Aberdeen. He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support shown to him and McKelvie’s family, emphasizing the need for more advocates like her in parliament.
Goals and Objectives
Empowering Women
The initiative is designed to:
- Foster gender parity and diversity within the SNP.
- Create a network of confident women ready to take on political roles.
- Provide skills in organizing, media communication, and policy-making.
Commemoration Events
In addition to the mentoring program, a special “wear it pink” event will take place in McKelvie’s memory on April 4, 2026, aligning with her advocacy for breast cancer awareness. Funds raised from this event will partially support the charity Breast Cancer Now.
Support from Political Peers
Members of the Scottish Government cabinet, including Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes, have committed to serving as mentors for the initiative. This collaboration highlights the bipartisan recognition of McKelvie’s impactful contributions.
Public health minister Jenni Minto acknowledged McKelvie’s unwavering commitment to amplifying women’s health issues, especially in breast cancer awareness and advocacy.
Legacy of Christina McKelvie
McKelvie’s legacy is characterized by her compassion, dedication, and drive for equality. Her colleagues remember her as a friend and champion for marginalized communities. In her honor, the SNP aims to continue her important work in raising awareness and effecting change within the political landscape.
