Important Perspective

A woman faced a dilemma after receiving an invitation to her brother’s girlfriend’s sister’s wedding, which was scheduled for the day before her 30th birthday. Her plans for a significant celebration led her to seek advice on Reddit regarding her obligations.

A 29-year-old woman reached out to the Reddit community requesting guidance after being put in a challenging position between family commitments and personal aspirations.

In her post, she explained, “I (29F) am invited to a wedding that’s on the day before my 30th birthday (which is celebrated big in my country).” The wedding invitation came from her brother’s girlfriend’s sister, reflecting a rather distant familial connection.

The couple planned to host their ceremony two hours away from her residence, requiring her and her boyfriend to stay overnight. This arrangement would likely affect their birthday plans. “We usually party until 3 or 4 AM,” she mentioned, highlighting the dilemma of needing to drive back on her birthday.

The timing of the wedding clashed with her desire for a grand celebration, as she had envisioned a two-week vacation for her milestone birthday. With the late arrival of the invitation, she had not yet made travel arrangements.

Adding complexity to her situation, she elaborated on the family dynamics. “My brother, his girlfriend, her sister, the sister’s fiancé and the sister’s parents pretend that we are one big happy family,” she stated, though acknowledging that they rarely interacted outside of formal gatherings.

She noted that despite the apparent closeness between her brother’s family and the bride’s family, her and her boyfriend’s social interactions with them were limited. “My boyfriend and I are never invited,” she said, emphasizing their exclusion.

Although she felt detached from these familial bonds, she did not strongly resent the situation. “To be fair, we don’t really mind, because the two sisters love to pretend that we are all sooo happy and picture perfect,” she remarked.

The poster referenced a past event where a group trip had resulted in conflict over differing expectations. “There were some big fights/arguments because not everyone wanted to follow their plans,” she recalled, indicating a history of tension.

She also pointed out that both sisters had a penchant for elaborate birthday celebrations, noting an ironic twist as the bride-to-be acknowledged her birthday conflict with a dismissive tone. “She invited us and her next sentence was: oh, it’s the day before your birthday, we will sing happy birthday for you,” she shared.

Her friends supported her inclination to skip the wedding, suggesting it wouldn’t make her a bad person. However, her parents took a different stance, pushing for alternatives such as adjusting her travel plans around the wedding.

“My parents think that I should take the trip before or after the wedding, since I’m off work the whole summer,” she quoted, mentioning their suggestion of flying on her birthday.

However, the prospect of traveling or recovering from a late-night wedding did not appeal to her. “Even if I do go to the wedding, I would either be exhausted on the next day or would be on a plane on my birthday,” she explained.

The significance of her 30th birthday heightened her frustrations. “I wouldn’t mind if it’s any birthday,” she stated, expressing her desire for a special celebration.

Concluding her post, she sought input from Reddit, “So — what should I do? Would I be the a—— if I go on a vacation instead of the wedding?” This inquiry generated diverse responses from the online community.

One user responded, “NAH, you can decline any invitation you want, but it’s going to have consequences. I’d recommend just leaving early if you want to celebrate your birthday the next day rather than skipping altogether.”

Another commenter noted the tenuous nature of her relationship with the bride and advised, “You’re not obligated to sacrifice your milestone birthday for your brother’s girlfriend’s sister’s wedding that’s like three degrees removed.”
