Wang Yanfen Appointed Vice-President of UNESCO’s OWSD for Asia-Pacific Region
Wang Yanfen, a prominent Chinese scientist and executive vice-president of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, has been elected as the vice-president of UNESCO’s Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) for the Asia-Pacific region. This significant appointment was announced during the organization’s 7th General Assembly held in Bogotá, Colombia.
About the Organization
The OWSD, established in 1989, is committed to enhancing the contributions of women scientists from the Global South in various fields of science and technology. Wang’s appointment marks an important step in strengthening China’s role in promoting gender equality in scientific research and development on a global scale.
Vision and Goals
During her address at the assembly, Wang shared her vision for her new role, highlighting the importance of international collaboration. She stated, “I will make active efforts to help forge stronger regional linkages and collaborations between the Asia-Pacific region and the other OWSD regional networks.”
Wang underscored the importance of not only involving women in science but also ensuring their growth and success in the field. She asserted her commitment to amplifying the voices of women scientists in addressing global challenges, ensuring they have a prominent presence in the scientific community.
Research Contributions
With over 30 years of experience in soil ecology and geography, Wang’s research focuses primarily on understanding soil carbon stability amid global changes. She has pioneered in situ experimental setups in northern China’s grasslands, enabling detailed studies of how ecosystems respond to environmental shifts and human activities. Her research advocates for balanced human intervention in dryland ecosystems, aiding in the reconciliation of conservation and utilization efforts.
Publications and Professional Engagement
Wang has an extensive publication record, authoring five monographs and over 350 scientific papers. Her work has appeared in leading journals such as Nature Sustainability, Nature Communications, and Global Change Biology. This body of work provides critical insights that inform policies on sustainable ecosystem management.
In addition to her research, Wang engages in global scientific dialogue and collaborative initiatives. She serves as vice-president for the International Scientific Center of Fertilizers and is a board member of the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development. Furthermore, she co-initiated the Global Dryland Ecosystem Programme and has directed the Sino-German research program on Tree Diversity Interaction.
Legacy of Leadership
Wang Yanfen is the third Chinese scientist to hold a leadership position within the OWSD, following Hu Qiheng and Fang Xin, both notable figures in the Chinese scientific community. Her election signifies a continued commitment to fostering representation and empowerment of women within the sciences in developing nations.
