The 2025 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup is set to captivate basketball fans worldwide as it unfolds in Shenzhen, China. As both hosts and reigning champions, Team China enters this tournament not only with a desire to defend their title but also a blend of opportunities and uncertainties. The absence of seasoned players like Li Meng and Li Yueru raises questions, while the potential debut of rising star Zhang Ziyu adds to the intrigue surrounding the national team.

1. Han Xu’s Leadership Challenge

With key players like Li Meng and Li Yueru unavailable, the Chinese team faces a significant challenge in maintaining their offensive performance. These veterans have been pivotal in past successes, contributing significantly to their scoring and playmaking capabilities. In their absence, the spotlight shifts to 6’10” center Han Xu, who commands a strong presence on the court.

Han Xu has proven her ability at a continental level, but increased defensive focus from opponents poses a new challenge. The team’s success may hinge on her ability to lead and adapt while ensuring effective collaboration with her teammates.

2. Zhang Ziyu in the Spotlight

The anticipated inclusion of 18-year-old Zhang Ziyu offers a fresh dynamic to the squad. Standing at an impressive 7’3″, Zhang’s remarkable skills have already garnered significant attention. However, stepping onto the senior stage for the first time during the Women’s Asia Cup will test her readiness.

Head coach Gong Luming faces a critical decision regarding her role. Balancing the need for experience against the risks of overwhelming the young talent will be essential. Whether Zhang plays a vital role on the court or observes from the sidelines, her presence will undoubtedly be a focal point for fans and commentators alike.

3. Navigating Home Court Advantage

Playing on home turf brings both benefits and added pressure. China enjoys the enthusiastic support of local fans, which can be incredibly motivating during matches. However, with the expectation of clinching back-to-back titles and securing their twelfth overall championship, the weight of these expectations is substantial.

In high-stakes games against formidable opponents like Japan and Australia, maintaining composure will be vital. Coach Gong Luming’s expertise in managing player rotations and maintaining focus will play a crucial role in determining the team’s ability to capitalize on their home environment.

As the tournament approaches, Team China is positioned with an abundance of talent and physical presence. While the home crowd will certainly be cheering, the squad faces significant questions to answer. If Han Xu can effectively take charge, if Zhang Ziyu proves her mettle, and if the team can remain resilient under pressure, the prospects of triumphing in 2025 will increase notably.
