Shanghai Introduces Keyan Return Plan to Support Female Researchers
In a proactive initiative to tackle significant policy goals, Shanghai has unveiled the Keyan Return Plan, designed to assist female researchers as they transition back into their careers post-childbirth. This program addresses two pressing priorities: creating a “birth-friendly society” and enhancing the nation’s scientific workforce.
Overview of the Keyan Return Plan
Launched last week by the Shanghai Women’s Association for Science and Technology, the plan directly addresses the unique challenges faced by women in scientific fields, particularly the balance of motherhood and professional responsibilities. According to the Jiefang Daily, a publication associated with the local government, this program signifies a critical advancement in supporting women scientists.
Financial Grants for New Mothers
The program’s initial implementation will focus on the Shanghai branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Here, 20 new mothers will benefit from a one-time research grant amounting to 50,000 yuan (approximately US$7,010). This financial support aims to alleviate some of the burdens faced by female researchers returning to work.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the grant, applicants must meet several criteria:
- Be under 40 years old.
- Have given birth within the last two years.
- Hold a doctoral degree.
- Possess a professional title at the deputy senior level or higher.
Furthermore, candidates are required to be engaged in “high-impact research” focused on either frontier technologies, national priorities, economic strategies, or public health, showcasing significant achievements in their respective fields.
Community Reception
While the program currently supports a limited number of participants, many female researchers view it as an essential step towards fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for women in science. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of balancing personal and professional responsibilities.
