Beijing Prepares for Global Gender Equality Summit
Summit Overview
Beijing is set to host an international summit focused on gender equality and the empowerment of women, anticipated to occur in October. Although the exact dates have not been publicly confirmed, Chinese authorities have indicated that details will be forthcoming soon.
Government Initiatives and Perspectives
The Chinese Foreign Ministry recently reported that significant conversations are underway regarding various topics, including the intersection of traditional family values and women’s rights in today’s digital landscape. Spokesman Guo Jiakun emphasized the progress made in Chinese women’s rights over recent decades, stating, “In promoting gender equality and women’s all-round development, China is not only an advocate but also an active actor.”
Participation and Representation
Several international officials and organizations are expected to attend the summit. However, there are concerns regarding the involvement of grassroots domestic NGOs. Reports have suggested that local NGOs may not receive invitations unless they are backed by foreign sponsors.
Recent Publications by President Xi Jinping
In alignment with the upcoming summit, two recently published books by President Xi Jinping contain selected speeches and articles addressing gender equality and traditional family values. These texts also provide directives to the All-China Women’s Federation, advising them to avoid adopting approaches akin to Western feminist movements.
