During the recent China Women’s Film Festival held in Abuja, Zhou Hongyou, a representative of the Chinese Embassy, reiterated China’s dedication to collaborating with Nigeria and other countries to bolster women’s empowerment on a global scale. The event underscored the importance of gender equality and women’s progress, particularly in sectors such as education, employment, and social inclusion.
Upcoming Global Initiatives
Minister Zhou highlighted the upcoming Global Women’s Summit, which aims to spotlight women as essential contributors to sustainable development. This initiative aligns with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, focusing on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The Chinese government has incorporated women’s development objectives into its national five-year plans, using women’s progress as a measure of national advancement. Zhou stated, “Chinese women have fully utilised their intelligence, talents, and creativity, playing an indispensable role in China’s transformation into a world economic powerhouse over the past five decades.”
Collaboration with Nigeria
Emphasizing the importance of international cooperation, Zhou noted the value of partnerships with nations like Nigeria in accelerating the global advancement of women. “China is working with the Nigerian side and other countries around the world to accelerate the comprehensive development of women,” he said.
Cultural Diplomatic Initiatives
Gabriel Saleh Zock, Chairman of Nigeria’s House Committee on Culture and Creative Economy, praised the partnership with China as a means of fostering cultural exchange. He stated that initiatives like the Film Festival not only celebrate women in the arts but also enhance cultural diplomacy.
Zock emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to greater female representation in governance, revealing ongoing efforts to amend the Constitution for increased women’s inclusion, aspiring for a minimum of 30% reserved seats for women.

Iman Suleman-Ibrahim, speaking on behalf of Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, remarked on the festival’s significance as a platform for celebrating creativity and storytelling. She noted its coinciding with a renewed discussion on the Beijing Declaration, which has been vital to advocating for women’s rights globally.

Highlighting the initiatives under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Suleman-Ibrahim spoke about programs aimed at empowering women and supporting vulnerable groups. She expressed optimism regarding the potential collaboration with China, particularly in sectors like digital storytelling and entrepreneurship.
