Genie Bouchard Graduates from Tennis: A Farewell at the National Bank Open

Published Date: July 31, 2025

In a poignant farewell, Canadian tennis player Genie Bouchard concluded her professional career at the National Bank Open in Montreal. This decision was made public before the event, where she expressed her intention to retire following her participation.

Memorable Matches and Emotional Farewell

As the tournament commenced, Bouchard electrified the local fans by defeating Emiliana Arango in a first-round match with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. This victory set the stage for her next challenge against No. 17 seed Belinda Bencic.

Despite a spirited performance, Bouchard was unable to overcome Bencic, losing in a closely contested match. Following the defeat, she addressed the Montreal audience with a moving speech, stating:

“I think it’s so special to play my last match here in Montreal on this court in front of you guys. I remember being a little kid sitting in these stands, hoping and dreaming that I can play on this court one day. … It feels like such a full circle moment to finish my career here.”

She added, “Tennis has given me so much. I’m filled with so much gratitude for this sport and the people along the way.”

A Legacy of Inspiration

Following her final match, Bouchard received an outpouring of support and gratitude from fans and fellow athletes. Many took to social media to commemorate her impact on the sport:

  • Bastien Fachan: “Genie Bouchard was the first Canadian to reach a Grand Slam singles final—paving the way for Milos, Bianca, and Leylah. She was a bona fide star of the sport in the 2010s. I’m gonna miss her on tour. Salut.”
  • Emma Raducanu: “Thank you Genie. Loved watching you play.”
  • Bianca Andreescu: “Congrats on a great career and inspiring us all. Wishing you all the best for what’s next.”
  • Nick Kyrgios: “Great career @geniebouchard. Enjoy whatever is next.”

A social media user reflected, “One of the best Canadian players of all time… She left her mark on this sport and paved the way for so many other young Canadians to chase after their dreams. Congratulations on an incredible career, Genie.”

Final Thoughts and Future Endeavors

Bouchard’s career concludes with numerous achievements, including one singles title and countless memories on and off the court. As she transitions into the next chapter of her life, her legacy remains firmly in place within the tennis community.

We wish Genie Bouchard the very best in her future endeavors.
