Controversial Remarks by Kennebunk Select Board Member Ignite Debate
Published on October 30, 2025
Context of the Incident
Leslie Trentalange, Vice Chair of the Kennebunk Select Board in Maine, recently sparked controversy during a school board meeting. Her comments regarding the participation of men in women’s sports have raised significant concerns among community members.
Specific Comments Made
During the October 20 meeting, Trentalange suggested that those who oppose the inclusion of transgender women in women’s sports exhibit “pedophilic tendencies.” She remarked, “Their obsession with genitalia points not to caring for the students in this district, but perhaps to an underlying guilt for their own pedophilic tendencies. There is a registry for that,” according to reports from the Maine Wire.
Reactions to the Remarks
Many community members have expressed outrage, with calls for Trentalange’s resignation. Republican State Senate candidate John Salamone condemned her statements as “false, defamatory, and completely unacceptable.” Board Chair Matthew Stratford labeled her comments as “inappropriate.”
Conversely, some defended Trentalange, asserting that her remarks were made in a private capacity, separate from her official board duties.
A Non-apology Apology
A few days following her controversial statements, Trentalange issued an apology, but notably directed it towards the LGBTQ community rather than the parents she accused. “I made a statement that one could say pushed some boundaries… If there are folks in the marginalized queer community that feel my message did not serve them or hurt them in any way, it is that which I regret,” she stated. She added that she would “relinquish” her role as school board liaison.
