Challenge for Women Candidates in Sirmaur District Recruitment
In Sirmaur district, only 24% of women candidates passed the physical proficiency test designed for the recruitment of female constables, as stringent standards hindered many from qualifying.
Recruitment Details
According to Sirmaur SP Nischint Negi, out of 2,178 women who attempted the recruitment test from February 11 to 13, only 535 qualified while 1,640 were disqualified for not meeting the defined criteria. Additionally, out of the 3,014 candidates called for the fitness test, 836 were absent.
Current Recruitment Goals
A total of 1,088 constables are to be recruited statewide, consisting of 708 men and 380 women. Candidates eligible for these positions must have completed their Class XII education and be between the ages of 18 and 26.
Impact of Limited Employment Opportunities
The limited job opportunities in the government sector drew a large number of women to the Nahan Police Lines for the physical aptitude tests.
Testing Timeline and Standards
The physical standards and efficiency tests for women commenced on February 11 and are concluding today, while similar assessments for men are scheduled from February 15 to 20 in Sirmaur district. The revised eligibility includes strict timings for completing the 800-meter and 100-meter races, which have caused challenges for many applicants.
Women must now finish the 800-meter race in a maximum of 3.45 minutes and the 100-meter race in 17 seconds. Previously, the 800-meter race had a limit of 4.15 minutes, with no specified time for the 100-meter race.
Moreover, aspiring female constables need to clear a high jump of 1.10 meters, increased from 1.0 meter in the last recruitment in 2021. The broad jump requirement remains unchanged at 3 meters.
Similar Standards for Male Recruitment
The standards for male constable recruitment have also been revised since 2001. Male candidates must complete the 100-meter race in 14 seconds and the 1500-meter race in a maximum of 5.30 minutes, a reduction from the previous 6.30 minutes. Additionally, the high jump requirement for men has been raised from 1.25 meters to 1.35 meters.
Future Recruitment Implications
With stricter qualifications in place, it is expected that fewer candidates will pass the physical proficiency test, leading to a diminished number of individuals eligible for the subsequent written examination compared to previous recruitment drives.
Focus on Fitness and Capability
Officials have stated that the updated parameters aim to ensure that only those candidates who are genuinely committed to maintaining a suitable level of fitness will be selected for the roles, while those neglecting their physical preparation may not succeed.
