Centenarian Geraldine Leo Celebrates 100th Birthday with Unmatched Energy
BAY SHORE, Long Island — April 11th marks the 100th birthday of Geraldine “Jerry” Leo, a remarkable woman whose vitality defies her age.
An Exceptional Fitness Journey
At the Great South Bay YMCA, Leo actively participates in an aerobics class, exhibiting physical capabilities that many individuals half her age may struggle to match. Known for her dynamic presence, she surprised class members by performing a five-minute plank just days before her milestone birthday.
While others reached their limit at two minutes, Leo steadily held her position for three, impressing fellow participants and fitness instructors alike.
Community Recognition
Her fitness achievements have drawn praise from the YMCA staff, including Health and Wellness Director Despina Tenedorio, who acknowledged her strength. Elizabeth Grant, a group fitness instructor, remarked on Leo’s plank performance, calling it “really unbelievable.” Friends and fellow class members, such as Marion Saturno, have expressed admiration for Leo’s dedication and form.
A Lifelong Commitment to Health
Leo attributes her longevity to a simple mantra: “Be consistent, be positive, and keep moving in whatever you do. That’s very important.” This advice resonates with many who have had the pleasure of witnessing her resilience and commitment to fitness.
Her relationship with the YMCA dates back to its opening in 1991, encouraged by her late husband, Dominick. Leo continues to engage in various fitness classes, including weightlifting sessions every Friday, demonstrating an unwavering dedication to her health.
Celebrating a Life of Inspiration
The upcoming celebrations not only mark Leo’s centennial birthday but also highlight her role as a community inspiration. As Elizabeth Grant stated, “Jerry is an inspiration to everyone who meets her.”
Leo’s friend Marion Saturno sums up the sentiments of those around her, saying, “She’s my hero.”
