A Celebration of Women in Music and Culinary Arts
I have a deep passion for reading autobiographies that delve into the lives of legendary figures in the ever-evolving world of music recording. As a fan of Broadway bio musicals, I am particularly captivated by the journeys of performance artists navigating the challenging landscape of the music industry. For women carving out careers in this field, the struggle for recognition, sustainability, and control is often a fiercer battle.
Spotlighting Female Icons
In recent years, Broadway productions inspired by the lives of female icons like Cher, Tina Turner, and Donna Summer have highlighted their victories, setbacks, and personal experiences, illustrating the contrast between fleeting fame and enduring stardom.
Hard Rock Casino’s Tribute to Women
To honor International Women’s Month, Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana is hosting a special celebration this March, complemented by St. Patrick’s Day menu specials for added flavor next week.
Shakira-Inspired Menu
The Hard Rock Café’s special menu features items that celebrate Colombian rock star and humanitarian Shakira, who celebrated her 48th birthday in February. Among the highlights is the Colombian Smash Burger, combining the crunch of kettle chips and the soft texture of a fried egg, along with a hearty chicken Caesar salad. Guests can also indulge in beverages like the “Hips Don’t Lie” margarita or a refreshing non-alcoholic cocktail with lime, cucumber, mint, and elderflower tonic. The dessert masterpiece is the indulgent “Dulce de Leche Brownie.”
A portion of the proceeds from food sales will benefit Shakira’s Fundación Pies Descalzos, a charitable organization she founded in 1997 aimed at improving the lives of impoverished children in Colombia through education, nutrition, and healthcare.
St. Patrick’s Day Special
Throughout the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day weekend, the Hard Rock Café will offer a festive Irish menu item: the Irish Smash Burger, featuring two savory smashed patties, pub cheese, white cheddar, cabbage bacon jam, smoked bacon, and pickles, accompanied by seasoned fries. Toast the holiday with specialty cocktails like The Irish Apple Crush and classic Irish Coffee.
A Glimpse at Iconic Costumes
Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana showcases over 150 costumes and memorabilia from celebrated female artists, including Shakira, Cher, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Beyoncé, and many more. These powerful women have made indelible marks on the music industry, inspiring future generations.
Reflections on Music Legends
Among the iconic figures, I’ve had the privilege of interviewing Diana Ross, who will celebrate her 81st birthday on March 26, as well as the late Mary Wilson, who passed away in 2021. Both were instrumental in the success of The Supremes, a groundbreaking act that remains influential in music history.
A Flavorful Recipe Tribute
Mary Wilson, known for her healthy lifestyle, partnered with author Mark Bego to create a recipe blog titled “Cook Like a Rock Star.” One of their delightful recipes is a creamy artichoke heart and tomato soup, perfect as we approach meatless Fridays during Lent. This recipe was inspired by a similar dish enjoyed at a restaurant during the Kentucky Derby.
Mary Wilson’s Creamy Artichoke and Tomato Soup
Makes 8-10 servings.
- 2 cups chopped onion
- 2 cups chopped celery
- ½ cup chopped garlic
- ¼ cup olive oil
- ¼ cup fresh chopped oregano
- ¼ cup fresh chopped basil
- 1 can (28 ounces) of diced tomatoes
- 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
- 1 pint half and half (or one cup heavy cream)
- 1 cup white wine
- 1 can (14 ounces) quartered artichoke hearts
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- Grated Parmesan cheese for garnish
Directions:
In a large pot, combine the onions, celery, garlic, and olive oil. Sauté over medium-high heat until softened. Add oregano, basil, canned tomatoes, tomato sauce, half and half, white wine, artichoke hearts, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
Transfer the mixture to a blender in batches and puree until smooth, then return to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Serve hot, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese and freshly ground black pepper.
