Women Scientists Share Their Journey on PM Modi’s Social Media for Women’s Day
In celebration of International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over his social media accounts to a pair of accomplished women scientists. This initiative aimed to highlight their contributions and inspire future generations.
Highlighting Women’s Achievements in Science
On March 8, the Prime Minister’s X and Instagram accounts showcased the work and experiences of two prominent scientists: Elina Mishra from Odisha and Shilpi Soni from Madhya Pradesh. Both women expressed their hopes for increased female participation in the science and technology sectors.
“Space technology, nuclear technology and women empowerment… Our message is that India is the most vibrant place for science and thus we call upon more women to pursue it,” they conveyed.
Elina Mishra’s Journey in Nuclear Science
Elina Mishra drew inspiration from her father, a dedicated researcher, which fueled her passion for science. She shared her remarkable experience at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Mumbai, where she became involved in advanced projects related to electromagnetism and accelerator physics.
Elina highlighted her role in the successful acceleration of a 20 MeV proton beam, stating, “It was indeed a very proud and satisfying moment.” She also mentioned significant contributions to the indigenous development of focusing quadrupole magnets for the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory’s PIP-II project.
Shilpi Soni’s Contributions to Space Technology
Shilpi Soni spoke about her tenure with the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) before joining the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Over a span of 24 years, she has played a pivotal role in the design and development of cutting-edge RF and microwave technologies across numerous ISRO missions.
“At ISRO, there is no glass ceiling, and it offers immense opportunities to address complex challenges with innovative solutions,” Shilpi stated.
She proudly informed that ISRO has successfully indigenized a complex Space Travelling Wave Tube technology, placing India amongst a select few nations globally. Currently, as an Associate Project Director, she oversees communication payloads geared towards enhancing the communication needs of Indian citizens.
Inspiring Future Generations
Both scientists emphasized the vast opportunities present in their fields, urging young women to take part in the scientific journey. They shared their enthusiasm about the increasing involvement of women in both nuclear and space technologies in India.
Through this initiative, PM Modi’s platform served not only to recognize the contributions of these women scientists but also to encourage a more inclusive environment for all aspiring female scientists in India.
