In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly established this special day to advocate for equal opportunities for women and girls in science and technology. It serves to acknowledge their vital contributions in driving innovation and creating a brighter future.
Women Making an Impact at McGill
“From Dr. Carrie Derick, Canada’s first female professor and founder of McGill’s Genetics Department, to Dr. Nada Jabado, the 2024 recipient of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Award, generations of women at McGill have been breaking barriers and narrowing the gender gap in STEM fields,” she remarked.
Recent Achievements of Women in Science at McGill
The first half of the 2024-2025 academic year has been remarkable for McGill’s female science students and researchers. Here are some recent highlights:
September 2024
Three students—Nami Dwyer, Allison Hutchings, and Andreea-Nicole Calenciuc—are among six McGill recipients of the 2024 Schulich Leader Scholarship, which is recognized as the most prestigious award in Canada for STEM studies.
October 2024
Noémie-Manuelle Dorval Courchesne, a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, receives the Prix du Québec by winning the Hubert-Reeves Prize, awarded to an exceptional young researcher.
November 2024
Professor Audrey Moores from the Department of Chemistry is appointed President of the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada. Additionally, Professors Natalya Gomez (Earth and Planetary Sciences) and Daryl Haggard (Physics) earn the 2024 Arthur B. McDonald Fellowships from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
December 2024
Dr. Nada Jabado, a professor of pediatric medicine, is honored as an Officer of the Order of Canada for her groundbreaking work in pediatric neuro-oncology, where she identified oncohistones and their link to cancer. Furthermore, Rosalie Bélanger-Rioux, a Faculty Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, receives a President’s Prize for Excellence in Teaching.
January 2025
Hui Su, a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Chemistry, is part of a McGill team recognized by Québec Science magazine for a pioneering study on utilizing sunlight to convert two major greenhouse gases into valuable chemicals, named one of Quebec’s top scientific advances of 2024.
