International Women in Engineering Day (INWED)
Celebrated each year on June 23, International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) focuses on recognizing the contributions of women within the engineering profession while also emphasizing the critical need for diversity in this field.
Origins and Purpose
INWED was initiated in 2014 by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) in the UK. The primary objective of this observance is to enhance awareness regarding the challenges women face in engineering roles and to inspire future generations of female engineers. This day acts as a platform for various stakeholders—including individuals, organizations, and educational institutions—to organize events, share impactful stories, and highlight the significant roles that women play in engineering.
Fostering Connection and Inspiration
By showcasing the achievements of remarkable female engineers, INWED encourages connections and motivates young women to explore careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. The initiative aims for a more inclusive and equitable engineering sector.
Engagement through Interviews
To commemorate International Women in Engineering Day, Machine Design had the opportunity to interview two influential figures in the industry: Ondine Beaufils, the senior engineering manager at Safran Electronics & Defense, Avionics, LLC, and Anoosheh Oskouian, CEO of Ship & Shore Environmental, Inc.
